wreckferret is an unknown quantity at this point
Sounds like a good idea , I also am keen to purchase a rebreather but am not very technically minded so a guide for Non-engineers would be good.

Diving Dude I would be happy to write some basics down for you as a comparison between YBOD and KISS - I have dived several years on YBOD and dive on KISS now and I am in love with KISS, the streamlining is fantastic in the water compared to the drag on the YBOD and you can go digging round in little small spaces that KATO won't fit into. This is just a "swim/trim" difference, there are obviously much bigger differences.

Anyway if your quest for knowledge has not been satisfied by the existing stuff on the site let me know and I will send you a bunch of stuff, in 2002 (I think?) I did some major research between both units as KISS was originally going to be my first rebreather.

A point to note - YBOD factory support is in this country and is very good, and you will encounted lots of YBOD divers on the boats, so in the field repairs are not too bad but KISS has a lot fewer failure points.

Regards

AnneMarie

EDIT - another point, it is important to carefully examine the reasons behind changing to closed circuit and what exactly you want to do with a rebreather. This is critical to make the right choice of unit for you. If you know very little of CCR then potentially electronic control is the best way to start, however if you run an eCCR manually all the time you will quickly learn what your ppO2 and controller *should* be doing at all stages of the dive, this is important for manual rebreather diving.

Agreed entirely and be VERY honest with yourself. If its just cos you want a new toy, then accept that. As long as you're aware of ALL the pro's and con's, any decision you take can be defended to yourself.

I'd disagree here, if you know very little of CCR diving, then research/reading are your starting point. (Could even take the form of a course)

Anyone diving ANY rebreather should be aware of how it works and its ideosynchrasies. This is what keeps you alive when it goes wrong.

zak, research prior to starting would be something I would take for granted.

I meant after all the research, then it may be best to use eCCR at the start, if you know little of real world diving with CCR, the idiosyncrasies of many units don't become apparent until real diving is conducted.

I'm not sure how many people splash out £4k+ without doing research first.

I do wonder how many people keep it up after splashing it out...

You'd have to have a childish sense of humour to comment on this one..... fortunately .....

Rebreather Books

Aside from the before mentioned "Mastering Rebreathers" by Jeff Bozanic there are two other books on the subject:

"A Simple Guide To Rebreathers" by Steve Barsky which is just that. Less in depth than Bozanic's Book, but it also reads less like a textbook (it's NAUI's textbook for Rebreather training and was conceived as such). It's out of print, but you should be able to find it on the net.

"Tek Closed Circuit Rebreathers" by Tom Mount, David Sawatzky and Joerg Hess.
It's a new book that I haven't read yet. It's available through Dive Rite Express, the link is usually at the bottom of this page. Judging by the contents listing on Dive Rite Express' website (plenty on CO2 and a chapter on CCR accidents) it should make a good read. They also sell Bozanic's book.

Hey Stefan, i have been searching for Steve Barsky's book for almost 2 year and i have yet to find it. So if you know anyone who wants to sell it I'd appreciate the information...

If I had known that it was going out of print I would have bought a bunch.
They used to have them here in many dive stores, even non-Rebreather stores. Barsky lives in Santa Barbara, and wrote a bunch of books about local diving, so they're fairly popular. It's easy reading, but a few years older than Bozanic's, covers less detail. Nice to have if you're building up a library, but really very simple.

I'm curious about the new book that Dive Rite Express has listed.
