Enough money for module 1 rebreather but not to buy rebreather..should i pick up??

Hi, i'm really really interested in learning rebreathers and i see it as an eventuality for me. I do hope to learn it asap but currently i'm at a dillema. I have sufficient money for module 1 rebreather course for evolution/vision inspiration but i will not have sufficient money for rebreathers..

Is it feasible for me to learn the course or should i just delay the plan till i can afford it in the future....which probably will be quite a couple of years time considering i'm studying now.

Please advise!!!

I thought it'd be good if i can spend month long hols volunteering to work at a rebreather training agency etc..but figured out not likely than any rebreather trainers need help from a novice.

Do the course. It'll at least tell you if you like the unit or not. And there are plenty of resorts these days that hire units too...

IMHO there's no better way of deciding what unit to buy than doing the course, half an hour in a pool is nowhere near enough...

I'm sure others will disagree, but thats the way I look at it...

Re: Enough money for module 1 rebreather but not to buy rebreather..should i pick up?

hmmm.... this is difficult,

Well if you want to, do the course as it will give you an idea if you like it or not, but you need to be aware of the fact that if you do not dive a Rebreather in a couple of years you would probably need to redo the course again when you get the unit. And that is for your safety!

Jonny's got a point, and the manufacturer might require you to do so for just that reason.
Besides, you'll likely want one twice as bad as now ... trust me.

Re: Enough money for module 1 rebreather but not to buy rebreather..should i pick up??

Another do the course.

Doing the course you'll figure out if it's "you" or not.
If not, nothing lost but some money, but heaps gained.
If you really like it (likely) then you'll probably sell a kidney to get one.

You could also go SCR (first), which is waaaay cheaper. ie 2nd or 3rd hand dolphin etc. The're cheap as chips, and although not as capable as ccr, it'll get you into breathers way sooner.

Your money, your choice.....

FWIW, I'd say dont do it;
  • Most people cant figure out if they really like a unit until quite a few hours of operation (20ish)
  • You'll need a refresher in all likelyhood, maybe a whole new course (due to downtime)

If you want to have a splash, various people arrange unit try-dives, which might give you a quick and dirty feel.

I don't know who does the training where you live--but according to the IANTD standards:

If the student does not take possession of, or have access to a CCR within 3 months of completion of training, a refresher course will be required on the CCR that must include review of operations of that CCR, and at least two dives on the CCR. (Closed Circuit Rebreather Diver - Item E. 1.)

Re: Enough money for module 1 rebreather but not to buy rebreather..should i pick up??

Only if you are on the way to saving for a soon to be purchase should you go take the full course. At this stage, even being off the loop for a week makes me feel less than in full control for the first few minutes on the dive. So, after you finish your course, unless you are going to have access to frequent rentals, you will get very rusty very quickly.

Check for try-outs and seminars near you until you are ready to buy.

Easy solution is order a Prism instead. That way you will have at least a year after your course to save up to pay for it

How could you and why should you?

Reaonable thought, and the PRISM costs about $2K less to boot.
