![]() | How tight are you packing? I had a question on just how tight is everyone packing there scrubber (and yes I asked this question in my class, and it was answered, but was just wondering how others are doing it). I realise that the tighter I pack it, the less chance there will be of channeling, but it also seems that there will be a point of diminishing returns, where the increase of WOB will out weigh the benefit of tighter packing. ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: How tight are you packing? Tight is good but I believe there is a point where you can get it too tight. The most important thing IMHO is consistency throughout the basket. If you over pack you can run into the risk of breaking down the granules of lime into dust. I have seen this happen with some of my students who get over zealous with packing in as much as possible. With our Rebreather (SIVA, SIVA+) if you over pack the basket you can damage the basket or stretch the nylon mesh in the basket. Rob |

| Who loves ya, baby ![]() ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: How tight are you packing? Quite tight as the PRISM only has foam pads rather than a spring loaded lid. As tight as I can get it without damaging the basket, the foam pads don't allow much leeway. Channelling is a serious issue that must be avoided, rather than packing sorb too loosely and risking that I would switch to a larger grain sorb and adjust my dive duration. |

Quote: (Originally Posted by James Appel) I had a question on just how tight is everyone packing there scrubber Thump thump thump.Pat pat pat. When it stops going down I stop trying to make it go down. I followed BAD Internet advice once and loose filled it, settled it and dived. It channelled after two and a bit hours. I have never felt so out of control in my life. See most threads on 'why you have an ADV?' etc. I won't retell the story again.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: How tight are you packing? Folks, Since there is no objective measurement of how the scrubber is packed, I tell my students, and pack my own (Inspo) "firmly". I pour a third, rotate it while slapping the side of the scrubber, then repeat, and repeat again. How firm is "firm"?? Well settled, solid but not jammed...hard to describe, but easy to demonstrate. And no, there is no "mysticism" involved. No set number of pats or rotations. Just good judgement. ![]()
