![]() | OT: rebreather mask for emergencies I'm interested in what you folks think might be a good rebreather mask for emergencies like the 9/11 tragedy. Recommendations? Price range considerations? Any help appreciated. Last edited by tompoe : 11th February 2006 at 01:57. Reason: need to check off alert notification |

| Who loves ya, baby ![]() ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: OT: rebreather mask for emergencies A rebreather mask? You mean a full face mask for use with a surface rebreather? Have a look at Rebreathers Worldwide, the Oxygen Rebreather Database. There you will find many rebreathers used for mine rescue and emergency services. Some of the scuba manufacturers like Dräger manufacture non diving rebreathers, others are build by companies that only make non-diving equipment. Most rescue personel uses full face masks, and manufacturers are frequently the same as the ones catering to the scuba market. Afaik several popular models used for diving are adapted or based on designs for surface use (Dräger (draegersafety.com I believe) and Interspiro come to mind). You can also try and google "MRA", "mine rescue aparatus" and such. Good luck. |

![]() | Re: OT: rebreather mask for emergencies Tough question to answer. If you want protection just from air-bourne contaminates you would have to know in advance what contaminates you are trying to filter out if you want a simple facepiece with filter cartridges. Cartridges are certified for specific contaminates and no one unit will work for everything. If you want supplied breathing atmosphere you can achieve a 4-hour maximum duration with a closed-circuit rebreather. These devices are only meant for the highly trained user and are not suitable for the "Every day Joe". You might find reluctance by any manufacturer of such units to even sell one to you. List prices for such devices can run from $3000-$15,000. Open-Circuit devices (Such as what fire fighters utilize) will supply a 30-60 minute duration and do not require the high level of user training. However one must ask the question of what is 60-minutes of air supply going to do for you? Can you get away from the perceived threat in that amount of time? There is really no simple solution to this issue for the general public. Would suggest that if something does in your area to simply get out there as quickly as possible. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: OT: rebreather mask for emergencies Biopak's come up for sale every now and again on ebay. The model number refers to the endurance e.g. BP45 is a 45min unit, BP240 (rarer to see) is 4hrs. Some come with a gas cooling system for hot environments and have a full face mask as standard. Do you have a genuine reason to be worried about needing one? Most rebreathers need a certain amount of preparation/maintenance. If you work in a high risk environment then I'd presume that adequate breathing equipment and training was being provided by your employer.
