Depth Rating For Each Type Of CCR

Both Dave Shaw and Don Shirley were diving Hammerheads (the original acrylic wrist units - with Rev C. hardware).

I have both units here in the shop now. Dave's is still working, as is Don's Secondary - his Primary imploded at around 800 feet or so because the night before the dive he had rotated his battery ring (breaking the ground wire), and while trying to diagnose the problem, spilled some of the Mineral Oil out of the electronic enclosure.

Dave's unfortunate death was due to a combination of things - what we've called the "cascade" effect in the past. Not the least of which was that he was scuba diving at nearly 900 feet of depth (not recommended for anyone unless, like Dave, you accept the tremendous risk involved).

That said - he had very successful dives with the Mark 15.5 prior to this event - which just goes to show that (a) You can get away with some gonzo stuff with your rebreather, and (b) While doing that, anything can happen to you at any time, and what you got away with in (a) you may not be able to get away with another time. A point which us "old timers" keep trying to hammer into the new guys, to varying degrees of effect...

In any event, I believe this makes the 15.5 the depth record holder - a record I PRAY none of you ever tries to break with any type of rig.

There is NOTHING down there worth what Dave's family is going through this holiday season. Remember that.
