Deep diving Certification using Tanks or Rebreather?

I have a question regarding Rebreathers and Dual tanks. I stopped by a local dive shop and was told that they would only certify me for Deep/Trimix using dual tanks. Is this the norm, that everyone has dual tanks that also have rebreathers? Or is this a shop specific requirement?

I'm asking because I would rather train on my Dolphin for deep dives with the hope of one day going to the Continental shelf and diving some of the more advanced shipwrecks, like the Andrea Doria. There are a total of 4 individuals here in the Phoenix area with the same basic desires.

Well it depends..

Some agencies like ANDI allow a person to get Trimix certified on a CCR without ever going the OC route.. It requires alot more dives than the normal CCR trimix class.. The one key point is that the equipment must be certified for use at the appropriate depths and the divermust have the appropriate experience before starting teh CCR trimix class,, The dolphinis not so it couldn;t be used.. Something like an Inspiration or Meg could be...

You wont be able to do very deep dives on a scr like the dolphin unless you convert it to ccr. Have you converted it yet ?

I have not converted to CCR. I do not think Dolphin in CCR mode is what I want when I go CCR, but right now, I am still quite new at SCR and I'd like to get near 100 dives on my Dolphin before I really start considering CCR RBs.

So, I take it that most people on CCR have been through dual tank diving before they went CCR?

I would say most have but that doesn't mean you should!

Moving from SCR to CCR is a much 'easier' progression than doubles to rebreathers.

Only possible down side I can think of is not having as much experience with OC when it comes to ever having to bail out off the CCR.

If it was me - I would not goback onto doubles if I was allready diving SCR. If I was you I would rack your dives up on your SCR whilst deciding what CCR to get.

Then go get that CCR rack up some horus on that and move up the qualification ladder then.

Sorry. Not historically accurate. Some Dolphins SCR's have been deep on the Andrea Doria way before the advent of the most current CCR's... with the exception of the Cis-Lunar and MK's.

I thought there was only 1 Dolphin ever used to dive the AD by Mr Odom ?

The Seeker had at least two sets of modified Dolphins diving the Doria in 98. When was Odom using his kit?

Fascinating.

How were they modified? Presumably they were running a trimix of some description?
Bigger tank(s)?
