OC bailout?

Ok i'm v new to Rebreather's. Don't fully understand everything but am sure i know the principles.

I understand the need for bailout as i dive solo to the 30-40m mark frequently. I obviously still dive OC at this stage.

So all you Rebreather guys and gurls, why don't you have a mini RB as bailout? Why do you have OC as bailout? Has no one come up with a micro bail out RB unit? Or do you like the look of tanks hanging of you? Not too streamlined is it? (Er, tongue in cheek poke and a jestful smile) From an outside looking in point of view it seems that anything that isn't streamlined is cursed unless it's a bottle of trimix swaying about in the current? Surely a nice neat 'ascent only' Rebreather that would fit somewhere on your person similar to an emergency chute for skydiving would be better than a couple of bottles swinging about?

Hi Martin, do a search for Bailout Rebreathers on here, its been discussed endlessly.... it sounds easy but consider the implications of starting a cold, rebreather in an emergancy situation.... you've got to have carried it up till the point you need it, keeping it dry, unflooded, electronics primed, O2 and Dil ready but not in use etc.

Its trickier than it sounds.

OC sucks but it generally works from off to 100% on in less than a second.

Thumbs up Re: OC bailout?

(what Ben said) plus most divers have OC already and some will have stages with OC regs too. Its very easy to just put a mix in the tin for your max depth and use that for minimum cost.

Re: OC bailout?

A lot of people can't wait for the day that there is a more practical way to carry a small bail out rebreather instead of open circuit tanks. It is possible right now, but as stated above, it is not a simple as carrying open circuit in many respects.

Hopefully, the day will be coming soon.

roughly I would say, at the moment, if you can do it with 2 tanks (10 or 12 liter) as OC bail-out, it's easier with OC than BOB
the tanks are always ready to use, for each dive.. the BOB must be checked/prepared for each dive..
people are used to OC, changing regulators...

if you need 3 big tanks or more to get up or out... BOB can be an alternative, if you can handle it...
