Re: Penny Glover & Jacques Filippi

Hello everyone,

I was fortunate to have been trained by Penny in Mai 2005 in French Polynesia. She was a great diver and a very nice person. We shall all miss her dearly.

As this was a bit of an event in Tahiti, we had a page in the local newspaper, which I have attached to this post.

All my thoughts and condoleances go to her family and friends.

Best regards,

Laurent

Re: Penny Glover & Jacques Filippi

All,
email from Fiona Denny, Penny Glovers sister regarding the service on the 7th April.
There is a Word document with local accommodation and a JPEG of the location of the church.
If you want this email me privately at sinclam(at)ntlworld.com
I've cleared this with Fiona first.
Martin

Dear everyone
I decided to send out this email for information to everyone who has contacted me although I know this email is not relevant to a number of you.
Some of you have specifically said you are coming to the memorial service in England on 7th April and others have said that you may be coming down to La Londes Les Maures/Hyeres/Toulonfor 3rd June, but I thought it easier to write about everything to everyone and then ask you to ignore the information, make use of it or pass it on as appropriate.
7th April 2006 - England
The service in England starts at 12 noon on 7th April at St Margaret's Church in Toft Monks. I attach a map for some help. We go on to the Elms afterwards for a snack. The Elms is a lovely location so hopefully it will be a cheerful time. I haven't got a postcode for the church, but our old house, The Beeches, which is just round the corner on Burnt House Lane is NR34 0ES. The post code for the Elms is NR34 0EJ.
My telephone number is (0044) (0) 1986 875683, Halesworth.
If you haven't already let me know and are planning to come, I would be grateful if you could just drop me a line so we can make sure there is enough food for everyone!!
3rd June 2006 - France
We have hired a Villa in Hyeres for the week before and the weekend of the 3rd/4th June. It is at 1108 route de La Crau 83400 Hyeres about 7 kilometres from the sea.
We wanted to have a party on the Saturday 3rd June in remembrance of Penny and Jacques. Everyone is welcome.
The idea is that we will visit the island of Porquorelles or take a boat in the afternoon of the Saturday and then go back to the house (which also has a pool) and have a barbecue or a meal together. Again if people need to stay the night before or the night of the 3rd and are prepared to take pot luck with sofas/floors and sleeping bags, you are welcome - just let me know.
Again if you haven't let me know and are planning to come down to the south of France, I would be pleased if you could drop me a line

And Finally
If you are involved in the dive in April... Good luck and be safe. Hope it goes well. I will be thinking of you.
All the best

I guess one or two of you may be coming from long distances. My wife and I would be happy to put one or two people up (take us as you find us!) We live in Diss just down the Road from Toft Monks. Penny was my original Rebreather instructor so I'm real happy to 'potentialy' be of use. PM me if want.

Re: Penny Glover & Jacques Filippi

Hi All

I've just heard the tragic news after being retired from diving for some years.

I taught Penny to dive at Bradford University Sub-Aqua Club in the early/mid eighties. At that time I never dreamt that she would advance as far as she did in the dive world. However, I do remember her great enthusiam for the sport.

In August 1987 we went diving together on her first "foreign" trip to Malta.
In my log book I wrote:-

10/08/1987 - 1st Cave dive for Penny. 47 minutes at 26m max.

Just as we entered the cave entrance my pillar valve "o"-ring blew out. There were masses of bubbles everywhere. Penny, who was a novice at the time, calmly escorted me to the surface as if nothing was wrong. I got a new bottle and we continued the dive without problem.

So, even then, she showed great composure under pressure.

Great memories, great girl. Sadly missed.

Sorry I cannot make the rememberance service.

Chris Hall

ex Bradford University Sub-Aqua Club

Penny Glover and Jacques Filippi Diving Memorial Plaque

On Friday the 21st April 18 divers gathered in La Londe, southern France. The group represented France, Scotland, Italy, Germany, Corsica, Spain and England. The divers present were buddies and friends of Penny Glover and Jacques Filippi who went missing whilst diving in the area in November 2005. The mix of languages and nationalities was testament to the diving tradition created there in the past.

Penny and Jacques were both active divers and instructors in the BSAC European region and Penny, as many of you know, was also involved with other technical agencies and diver training in France over the last decade. Their many years of experinece as divers and instructors does not make their absence easier to bear. Their loss has had a deep affect on these diving communities.

A memorial plaque dedicated to the two was placed on the wreck of the Donator during a dive to remember them both. The plaque which recognises their passion for diving has been secured on a wheel at the stern of the ship at a depth of 42 metres. It reads in French and English, ‘In memory of two friends who loved to dive in the Mediterranean and the oceans of the world.’ Although the day had a sombre tone the weather was good and skies were blue. Those who dived were able to enjoy a fitting opportunity to show respect for their friends.

I still miss them both very much as do many of those present and those who could not make it. All are welcome to visit the plaque and remember why the area was so special as a dive spot for Penny and Jacques. In our respect of this tragedy we must always remember their humanity and the need to think of their families. I hope that we will also think of those left behind in our cautious pursuit of this sport in the future.

Re: Penny Glover & Jacques Filippi

Oscar.
