| memorial threads Could we please do a better job separating "memorial" or announcement threads from discussion of cause. I think this has lead to some very "poor taste" situations. If there is anywhere where heavy moderation is needed it is here. At the same time there is a lot to be learned from a frank discussion of fatalities. Memorial threads--write as if you were writing to the family. Discussion thread--how about starting with statements of fact, then speculating when these are somewhat established. Still keeping in mind someones spouce or children may read it. Thanks.

| Re: memorial threads Amen Brother! You never know who might stumble across some hard information to handle. Tread lightly, especially in memorial forms. Just my two cents. FD ![]() |

Such discussion helps me stay successfully scared of these contraptions. The memorial portion also helps prevent these individuals becoming merely a statistic. It's great, as a new rebreather diver, hearing how these individuals enriched the community. I do not enjoy reading these threads but feel they provide insight into the world of diving. The different perspectives and points raised in incident discussion also assist the entire learning process giving a multi-faceted approach to avoid/ resolve potential problems we all may face in this risky sport.

| Re: memorial threads I totally agree that memorial threads should be cordial. I also think that discussions of an accident should be sensitively written to not be degrading to the individual. I don't think there is any point in having such discussions though, if we are to remove all extrapolation, "what if's" and even speculation. I assume we will never have absolute answers on most accidents... I see it all as speculation, and the value of how speculating can help us all examine our practices and be safer divers. definition of speculation:

| Re: memorial threads If there is anywhere where heavy moderation is needed it is here. Yes - and no. Moderation in banning members and closing threads are counter-productive. Instead the moderators should if an issue such as speculation in a memorial-thread just mode the posts to an analysis-thread. Per se, its not moderation but separation - something I would prefer! Nicolai - currently very disappointed in the moderation! |
