Re: Homebuilt Meg Radial Scrubber

Yes Very Very nice, Well done.
I was the Production Manager for the first 40 Cis-Lunar's out the door back in the 90's. The canister was a lot of work to make, but as I know now, they are worth there weight in GOLD, and I do have one in my MEG. I got one of the last ones for sale a couple of years ago and I'm happy I did.
Good Luck, and when do you start making them in production?

Re: Homebuilt Meg Radial Scrubber

It certainly looks the part, well done.

It seems like your lid would be easier to attach/remove than the ISC pre-production version even if it is not quite as elegant.

Have you calculated the approximate costs for the bill of materials, and the difference if you used delrin rather than PVC?

Thanks- means a lot coming from a Cys alumnus. There won’t be any production for a couple of reasons. That’s why I posted the plans for anyone to use- or commission their local machine shop to use.

Reasons (short version): 1. No time. 2. We both live in the land where people sue and win because their hot coffee was hot. Diving ECCRs is a tad more hazardous than drinking hot coffee.

Best,
Ken

I was very impressed with the project, report, and results. Outstanding!

Thank you for sharing your hard work.

Without trying to be cute, approximate cost to build is a bit indeterminate since I built a couple of them and also put a LOT of stock in the scrap pile while building the learning curve. There is also the issue of tooling since some was on hand, other had to be made or bought. Just the raw stock that made it into a scrubber- and escaped the scrap pile - might be in the $300 range.

Derlin is good stuff, but not if you want to build something that is bonded together. That’s why I went the PVC route. The processes and adhesives to reliably bond Derlin do exist, but they are BREATHTAKINGLY expensive.

Re: Homebuilt Meg Radial Scrubber

So who would be interested if I made a few? When I get a feel for how many I can get a pretty close price.

Re: Homebuilt Meg Radial Scrubber

Excellent work!

Is the lid difficult to get on with only .001-.002" of clearance?

I've never had my hands on a cis canister - dimension wise is this a fairly faithful reproduction? How does the length and inner and out diameters compare?

Hi kmev-

The lid fits just fine. The trick is to be certain everything is clean and then just gently slide it into its recess. If it’s too snug, simply take off a couple of thousandths.

Other than the one brief exposure at DEMA 05- where I wasn’t thinking radial at the time- I’ve never seen a Cys scrubber in the flesh and have never handled one. I’m frankly clueless how the two compare dimensionally, but since form generally follows function I’d be surprised if they were externally all that different. The starting points I chose to work from were the exterior diameter of the stock axial scrubber and the height of two joined filter screens. All other dimensions flowed from them.

Internally things would have to be a very different story since the Cys “spent” a notable portion of its interior volume on a hydrophobic membrane. For the rig it was designed for that made sense, but not so for the Meg IMHO. That extra volume is dedicated to ‘sorb instead.
