Very easy. Try to do that with a dry-suit, two stage bottles and a 10.000$ camera in your hands ... I keep my valves down. I did try the other way.

Valves inversed works if the rebreather functions normally. But if your solenoid stucks ... I would like to see you control the O2 via the valve during a 60+ minute deco. Big PITA.

Re: Valves Up or Down?

How did you reach your valves when on OC in drysuit? Why not clip camera to d-ring in case of problem?
I would disconnect solenoid-feed and dive manually...if problem with manual O2 feed, disconnect that and plug in offboard O2 to left CL and feed from there if that problem would come up...or you could always bailout...
Well we all have different ideas how we want our gear...
What works for you/me works

I can reach my valves on OC, but in a real OC dive you only need to do this once, not multiple times (O2 - solenoid stuck open). I don't think bailing out just because of an solenoid problem is a smart thing to do. Better to stay on the loop.

It all depends on the rebreather you are using. On an unmodified Inspiration it is not possible to disconnect the solenoid without loosing the electronics.

Each to its own, like you said. I'd rather keep it simple . Never thought I was ever going to say that.

I couldn't so I inverted the cylinders. Even people who can reach valves behind their head have commented how easy and fast it made a shutdown when they tried them.
Valves at the top were a daft idea that was needed for the twinhose reg where the valve needed to be level with the mouthpiece. Only amateurs still use them.

Exunctly. Valves down is just better. There's a reason why Navy divers and firemen have them that way.

Re: Valves Up or Down?

I use my unit mainly to cave and for trimix dive in Mexico with water temp. on the cenotes at 77 F and on the ocean between 80 F to 84 F what means wetsuit almost all the time and on this case (wetsuit) I like the tanks upright on my Meg and on my Inspiration/Travelframe.
I just use valves down if I need dive with drysuit wearing a extreme undergarment and on this case doesn't matter because with drysuit is easy to offset the valves weight and you can have the valves upside down.
With the valves upside down wearing jetfins and wetsuit your legs get to heavy and to keep the trim (horizontal position) will make you tire on long cave dives in special if you are swimming in a cave with many jumps/gaps like down here will get worse.
When you stop to do a jump/gap your legs will come down (creating a silt situation, if is a small cave or if the line is close to the ground) or you need keep kicking backward/forward to keep your legs up what will make you tire much faster.
That is way I mount my tanks up right!!!!
Cheers,

Re: Valves Up or Down?

For me that is the main reason for liking valves up....especially when in wetsuit...I hate placing counterweights to get the balance right..
When in drysuit one needs more weight anyway and can help "buttheavyness" by having a little more air in the legs,,

Re: Valves Up or Down?

I see several great advantges for valves up

Wathether the size of the bottle you use, the tream is the same and the upper side of your Rebreather is also the same, so there is no real danger for upper part of the rig wich is just behind your neck or head and very easily controlled, on the contrary down valves make the upper size of the rig far higher if the bottle's size increase ( bing bang bong ).

Vales up protect the lower part of the rig when you fall on your but between sump or before dive, the tanks tuch the ground first or at least greatly protect your Rebreather.

Greatly easyest to wear your rig in muddy and rocky situation
