Talking Mod 3 Completed

Well I've had a week & a bit to recover from one of the most intensive courses I've ever done and in the post this morning I received my cert card to say I'm now officially a Mixed Gas CCR diver on my Meg.

First of all a big thanks to Dave (DecoDiver) for as always making the course very informative, hard work, rewarding & a barrel of laughs at the same time!

Here goes with a brief'ish run down of the course.

I arrived at Andy Hayhurst's place on the Thursday morning to collect Dave & his kit and to meet the 2 Inspiration guys who'd be doing the course alongside myself & my mate Mark E.
With kit all loaded we headed off to Capernwray (Inland Quarry training site) to get things started.

From Dave's briefing it was apparent that this course would most certainly live up to his reputation of us having to 'Earn the cert' rather than buying it!
(Especially when he informed us he'd already failed 2 O/C Mix divers earlier in the week for not being up to scratch )

Over the next 2 dives we were relentlessly put through our paces doing mask clears, loop clears, bailouts, no-mask swims, stage hand-offs, no-mask gas-sharing swims as well as the usual High O2/ Low O2/ CO2 drills, oh and some line skills as well.
All seemed to go fairly well except for the odd mistake which was rewarded with the customary shouting & swearing through the loop from Dave...

The 2nd dive ended in a rather sobering manner for all of us, with Dave illustrating the need for carrying bailout by simulating a full loop flood...

We then head back to Andy H's to refill gases & pack scrubbers ready for the trip to Wast Water on Friday and a couple of hours theory.
Mark & myself return to our B&B for a spot of dinner before heading off to bed at a rather early 10.15 suprisingly knackered!!

Friday morning we meet at Andy H's all slightly tired and in rather overcast conditions unlike the briliant sunshine from Thursday .

Dive 3 in Wast Water starts off promising as the viz is a rather good 10-12m.
Needless to say over the course of the next few hours it diminishes somewhat with another tirade of skills practice from Dave including lots of un-expected no-mask no-loop bailouts & Mod 1 skill drills.

Just as well we were the last divers out of the water as I don't think the other divers would have appreciated the crap viz conditions we'd created

We return to Andy H's again to refill gases & scrubbers before finishing off the theory with some very sobering thoughts on bailout requirements & scenarios.

We finally return to the B&B to collapse into bed not long before midnight.

Saturday morning see's us back at Andy H's before heading off to Wast Water for our final dive to the bottom around 75mt.

On this dive we have the added pleasure of Andy Hayhurst & Phil Ennis joining us for the trip to the bottom.

Ok so this is the big one and we are all fairly apprehensive but expectant that the hard work from the previous 2 days will stand us good.
More skills & drills follow in the dark waters but thankfully it's not that cold at depth (to me anyway ) recording a respectable 7/8 deg.

After 2h 40m in the water we all emerge from the water to find it's still wet & overcast except for a patch of sunlight right down the other end of the lake... Oh how typical of British weather!

Dave debrief's us and gives us the good news that he's satisfied with our performance and have earnt our certs.
We then pack all the kit away and head back to Andy H's (via the supermarket) for some much needed beer and a BBQ kindly attended to by Andy's wife.

We also meet Simon (Gadget) & Julie (Tigger Meg) and spend the evening chilling out and swapping stories.

All in all a great 3 days with lots of hard work from Dave which made for a very enjoyable and worthwhile course and I'd thoroughly recommend him to anyone.

Sorry it didn't turn out to be that brief a report.....

Neil

Unfortunately, I am all too familiar with that sound.

Congratulations!

Well done!
In what organization was the course held?
What is the minimum/maximum depth for mod3?
Thinking about doing it myself...

Hi Roger,

It was with PSA International, the course qualifies you to a max depth of 100m.

Re: Mod 3 Completed

Well done Chris, it was nice seeing you again and congrats on earning your cert, it is refreshing to see former Mod 1 students of mine like yourself, Neil and Mark who are right on top of their skills from day one, good to see that you practice my ethos of skills every dive.

Thanks to you all for your hard work and commitment, and yes I failed 2 OC trimix people that same week for just not being up to scratch.

Cheers,

Dave.

Courses available

And if anyone is after doing normoxic trimix or advanced trimix on Evolution/Inspiration or Megalodon I have another week of courses in the UK in September and regular courses for the Europeans in Switzerland throughout the summer...............

I can only guarantee that you will learn a lot about your own diving abilities and your units on this course, the course is hard, intensive and fun.

Cheers,

Dave Cooper.

Re: Mod 3 Completed

Let me also add my thanks to Dave for an enlightening and challenging course.

It was a sobering reminder of how you need to keep on top of your skills. We all promise ourselves that we will practice this skill or that skill after we have cleared our deco, but how many of us actually do? I for one have learned to not be so blasé about it – if you say you are going to practice the skill, don’t get out of the water until you have done so

Once again Dave, thanks for all the tutoring and knowledge.
