| WOOT! I'm picking up my Meg tonight! It's finally here! I'll be picking it up tonight.... my brand new Meg! ![]() ... and provided the weather holds, I'll be doing a refresher course and first dives with the unit on Sunday! I made the remainder payment on Tuesday and as I handed the check over, the voice in my head asked, "Is it worth it?". But then I remembered back to my training I did in August... in the space of two weekends, I spent 12 hours underwater without deco and had wildlife encounters I'd never experienced before. On one afternoon dive I was just sitting on the bottom while doing my 15ft safety stop when the moment just hit me. It was so serene. Just the gentle sound of my breathing and the ocean as fish went about their business as if I weren't there... and all this was just during the training course! It was wonderful... ... and now I get to experience that again and again with my own Meg! Is it worth it? DAMN RIGHT IT IS! ![]() Happy diving all! -Jesse- ps- And now that I can get some more experience hopefully I'll be able to start posting threads that actually contribute something! ![]() |

| Mini first-dive report and open question... Hi All! Warning: alert! So, I picked up my meg on Friday night. I'm in the US (Los Angeles) and I ordered it back in August, so it's been a 4-month wait. I was tired so rather than risk a stupid mistake, I simply unpacked it and laid out the pieces ready for a fresh start on Saturday. On Saturday it started raining and the weather threatened to take a turn for the worse. I put the unit together, filled the scrubber and did a 5-minute couch dive to check the electronics... it looks absolutely fantastic and it's such a beautifully built machine, I love it I'll post pics soon. Forunately, by Sunday morning it had cleared to a cloudless sky. For the refresher we went out to Casino Point on Catalina Island. The wind was blowing a gale, but water visibility was reported to be about 40ft, so not so bad. Dive 1: Casino Point Depth: 27 meters Runtime: 48 min SP: electronic 1.2, run manual at 1.3 The first dive was a little uncomfortable. I was nervous/excited and had some handset fixation... October was the last time I had dived with a Meg I felt quite cautious. Also I had since re-rigged by harness system to work with OC, so there were a bunch of small adjustments to be made to return the rig to CC fighting form. Dive 2: Casino Point Depth: 22 meters Runtime: 52 min + 15min SP: electronic 1.2, run manual at 1.3 During the surface interval, I set about making the changes to my rig and the next dive was much more comfortable. I started to reclaim some of the muscle memory and the dive became much more familiar. It was during this dive I got my first scratch on the faceplate of my primary... it was like getting that first dent in your brand new car.... inevitable but heartbreaking. We surfaced, and then at my suggestion we returned to 6 meters for more drills for the 3 H's. Some final comments... I am going to swap out the mouthpiece... I find the factory standard a little difficult to keep hold on; the bit's quite thin and I find I'm breathing through my teeth, increasing the WOB. I noticed I start unconciously loosening my grip with my teeth and hold more with my lips to breathe easier... I'm looking at getting a M48 FFM and simply rig that up with a poseidon mouthpiece. Ob viously I need to do much more diving on the unit, but I really like the Apeks electronics; the new calibration features of v2 are sweet... the millivolt tracking during calibration... nice. And options for allowing specification of O2 percentage and altitude adjustment for calibration... they'll be handy during travel. Actually, I have a question for Meg divers out there... what do you find is the best way to transport your Meg locally? I have a big storm box and load it assembled into the case (with a little padding) and wheel it around. Do you dissassemble it and construct it on site, or move it assembled? That's all for now. ![]() -Jesse- |
