Bailout bottle size

Hi all, What size bailout bottle do you guys recommend for recreational diving up to 40m? I am fed up with renting bottles as it's getting expensive! One issue is that I am considering getting trimix certified for my meg in the next few months. What bailout bottle should I buy then if this is the case? And should it be oxygen cleaned? I was considering a 13cf (or 5.5litre) bottle. Thanks. Marcus

I´m using a 7.0L Alu, 02 clean. for most of my diving untill 50m.

Steel 7s to 45m & Ali 11s after - on the deeper stuff it won't be enough anyways so invariably dive as a team.

Various threads on bailout mixes and amount of gas on this board elsewhere.

Carry as much as you can, most seriously underestimate how much will be needed until it's needed !!! Try switching your computer over to a bailout mix at depth or on a long deco ...... make sure you are wearing nappy at the time !!

I use the internal diluent cylinder (3L) for no Deco dives (Auto Air regulator on the jacket of the Inspiration), eventually I carry a small 2L cylinder more with a separate regulator and this up to 40M. I have a 6L steel cylinder of course O2 clean for Deco dives up to let's say 45/50M. Deeper I use a S80 aluminum cylinder also O2 clean (Luxfer is always O2 clean, so keep it clean :-). Personally, I do no dives for the moment that needs more bail out than one S80. Deeper you should consider an asymmetric bail out strategy.

If you intend to do Trimix you should consider a S80 or 2*S80 plus a 6L (steel) or 7L (aluminum).

What I see most often in the situation you described, 40m at 10min deco on a Rebreather, is a 40cf aluminum cylinder with dilluent accessable for OC.

I've been diving with a 30cf for OC and 40m rebreather diving. Going deeper I'll likely move to a 40cf with a 24cf dilluent and 13cf OC accessible O2 bottle When I go to trimix I'll move to a 40 for bottom/travel mix and use the 30 for deco gas unless depth/deco demands otherwise.

so i started with a 4 lt but i always rested assured because i had the buddy air with me ...UNTILL ...lol...i flooded a lund and inhaled water. i had my bail out but beacuse i always kept in mind that i had my buddy air with me that is the firstthing that i took in my mouth.

it was a relaxed ascend from 20 mt with a wall. upon resurfacing i was left with only 40 bar in my diluent from almost 200 bar.

that same day i took away the buddy air.

then started diving with two 4lt.

then i tried to do a controled ascent from 40 mt doing all deep stops with my bailouts and thought again for two 6 lt.

now i ended with two 10 alu.

some might say that it is big but i prefer diving with one upto 40 mt...which i always have some deco to do and use both on deeper dives.

whilst renting i think that the best thing to do is try different tanks to see how they feel but it is never enough especialy if doing deep dives.


what i will be thinking is to get two 9 lt carbon fibre 300 bar. still have to try them out but with 300 bar it would be as if they were a 12 lt.

already found a nice site selling them ...lol

what i need is to get the cashhhhh for them.

I have two bailout bottles.

I've got an ali 7 litre (200 bar) with Nx 28 in it. It's breathable at 45m (if a bit hot). That will get me out of most things with minimal deco.

I also have an ali 40cu ft bottle with Nx 80 in it. I wouldn't take this unless I thought I'd have >20mins of deco to do if I bailed out.

Why not sit down and use your RMV and the depths you might dive and do the calculations for yourself? You must have been shown how to do them if your taking a trimix course soon.

I agree 100% with what you said, but with a minor change in bold above.

Why would someone carry the same amount of bailout as a stranger on the internet who likely has a different RMV??

Thanks, I was assuming (maybe incorrectly) that the OP would know enough to arrive at an RMV that they felt comfortable reflected what they might use in an Emergency situation as well as adjusting for depth when calculating.
