New Handset Lens

I'm sitting here on my first maintenance expedition, which is a pretty scary thing.

Last sat night after a great dive we reached the cavern zone, and I went to change the setpoint and my confirm button didn't work. I stood on my head. gave it the universal sign but nothing made it allow me to change setpoint.

by the way I read the threads on this in here so I twiddled it around and it works now!!!

I figured I need to change the button, so I got one in one day believe it or not from fill express. The handset has a big scratch on it so I got a new handset lens at the same time (figured i might as well)

anyhow, now I'm stuck wondering how to change the lens. I have lots
of fancy little star shaped bits but not a single one that fits the screws ... if i'm not supposed to take it off then how come I can buy a new one.

any advice for a freaked out first time service tech would be helpful

I have two.... I'll bring one 'on loan' tomorrow night. Pack the OC gear, I don't think your going to want to perform this in the 'field'... Tho Eric will be around and has done this, or at least looked over Scott's shoulder (thinking about an Optima probably) when he took his apart...

hey tim,

Yes i'm not going to do it yet but the button is working so I'm going to give
it a shot tonight. If it won't work then you will have some surface support.

actually that's not my biggest problem!!! I suddenly realized last night that I can't get an oxygen fill today without a major hassle!! sheesh. Does Tarpoon do O2 fills?

Re: New Handset Lens

Well... after twisting the button it started working fine so I decided to actually take it out for a spin last night instead of packing my OC gear.

It worked perfectly!!!! What a fun dive. I think I'm finally making friends with this thing.

Tim Thanks a bunch for the loaner bit, and MP thanks for the advice on
how to change the lens and buttons. You guys are great .... anyone
who drinks boddingtons has got to know what's going on!

Re: New Handset Lens

Hey Les,

I have some heavy duty adhesive film that will keep that lens looking brand new. I installed it on mime and Mem's handsets and have some left over if you and Tim want some. I'll be back in the states on the 16th so if you're interested let me know and everyone can stop by for a few cold ones and I'll install the film on the lenses.

Hi Scott,

Do you have a brand name for that adhesive film that you use or can anyone recommend something to protect the screens on the handsets?

3M makes lots of different kinds...

Here is an example...

You can do a google search on protective paint film or headlight protective film.

Re: New Handset Lens

Cut and pasted from my original post...

I started looking around at a few local autoparts stores for the headlight protection film some have used on their hand sets but came up with ZIP. Not one store even knew what I was talking about. So I then went to a motorcycle store thinking that they might have something to protect lights on off road bikes and came up with something that will work perfect. They're called backgrounds and they're used as the back ground for the numbers racers put on their bikes. They come in a pack of 3 12"X17" panels, you can get them in all kinds of colors, including clear, they're thick flexable self adheasive and they cost me $18 for the 3 sheets. The company that manufactures them is called N-Style and you can see the exact product at the following link.

N-Style Graphics ONLINE

I cut a piece of the film slightly larger then the lens, removed the lens from the handset ( DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOUR HANDSET LEAKS AFTER DOING THIS ) I applied the film to the lens and used a fine wood file around the edges of the lens to cut the film and bevel the edges so it wouldn't peel so easily. I used a hobby knife to cut out the holes for the screws and then reinstalled the lens. It's been nearly a year since I put the stuff on and it's still there and working great.
