| Supporting Member ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Shaving some weight off the Meg??? I would like to reduce the overall weight of my Meg for NDC diving with the girlfriend. Not being the biggest bloke in the world the meg is a bit of a bloody sherman tank to take onto a recreational diveboat for some shallow water playing, ( Please dont tell me to take a single 12ltr ) so:can anyone tell me? If I purchased from ISC a mini meg plennum, STA, and mini meg scrubber...and I bolted 2 ltr bottles to the unit instead of 3ltrs how would that effect the weight I would need to carry? IE: If my undersuit and drysuit remain constants, what weight if any would need to be added or subtracted to my kit configuration? Bottom line is this....if I part with all the green and cracklies would this be a waste of time if all I did was reduce the kits physical size and not reduce the weight due to having to add more lead. If anyone has been down this rocky road or has experience in this I would love to take advice.

A friend of mine who is a smaller lady just bought a meg can that they turned down the lower part of the plenum removing half the material below the head clamps. I believe I heard they reduced the weight by 6lbs.

![]() ![]() | Re: Shaving some weight off the Meg??? I have both rigs (Mini and Std plenum), use whichever one is appropriate for the type diving I'm doing with a cut down (Golem) backplate and OMS 35 lb wing. I generlly use Faber 19s (well, a 23 FX for the dil side) with the std rig and Faber 13s with the mini, both using the same COPIS head with HH secondary and Shearwater on the fourth cell. I hang a two lb weight atop each inverted tank to get my trim right. It shaves about 13lbs from the rig when I use the mini cannister and Faber 12s, with the std ISC Mini scrubber (vice the Golem 8 lb scrubber in the std.). I don't need any additional weight belt lead with either rig (I dive wet.) john Last edited by diver1369 : 6th May 2008 at 13:09. |

![]() | Re: Shaving some weight off the Meg??? Some quick calculations 2 x 3ltr Fabers are approx 1.5 KG neg bouancy 2 x 2ltr Fabers are approx 1.2 KG neg bouancy There for 0.3 kg more bouyant The Mini Meg Can displaces 0.9 Ltr less and carries 0.8 KG less sorb so counter balances. Given that the volume of the can is lost from the lightest part of the can I would say it is a neutral change. Mark |

But we're defo off to France on Monday morning and I'm giddy with anticipation (after so many blown out dives recently). So forgive me ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Shaving some weight off the Meg??? I use the Cave Meg (mid-sized canister with std scrubber). For wetsuit diving, I can drop the SS backplate and go aluminum and save 4 lbs. This puts the whole rig with 2 ltr steels at @ 60 lbs. I don't see a whole lot of advantage in going with aluminum 13's unless you're trying to fix bouyancy. The weight difference is very negligible. If you are using 3 liters, they are way over kill for recreational diving. I would drop to the 2 liters. This shaves a few pounds total. As for dropping to a Mini Meg canister and scrubber, that is probably the biggest reduction in weight but you'll need to put it back on your belt. Kitting up a Mini Meg on a rolling boat seems like a sucky propisition at best. The difference between my buddies standard meg equipped with 3 ltr bottles and a stainless plate and my cave meg with 2 ltrs and a stainless plate is just over 10 lbs.
