I would say 3mil. Apparently it is difficult to keep the edges (that band between the top and bottom parts) glued. This is where the majority of leaks start. Good luck with your endeavor, let us know how they turn out.

Re: neoprene

Finaly it's not easy to measure neoprene
I think 4mm thickness

I test my new Cl this week-end. It's really good product. Good breathing
And especially as if we had nothing on the chest
Equipment easily in water and on the boat

Several pictures of my configuration Megalodon

Re: neoprene

4mm. Difficult to make them though. You don't want them to leak from the sides or from the fittings (T-pieces, manual by-pass, etc). And you need a solid way to clip them to your rig.

Re: neoprene

Probably something other than neoprene glued to reinforce the conenctors. The first CL's that I made, you had to squeeze T pieces on very tight and then that would crush the neprene... And it also stretches a bit...

I did not have a problem with the inflator. But mine were 7mm neoprene. The 4 mm one also didnt have a problem with the inflator...

Re: neoprene

I've never made any counterlungs but a critical aspect is obviously the material, as you've discussed. That being said, perhaps you can investigate the use of crushed (or compressed) neoprene as used in many neoprene drysuits. It's available in 2 and 4mm, that I'm aware of. It's tougher than typical neoprene, varies less in bouyancy at depth, seems to hold a seam/gluing better (in my experience), and still offers flexibility and stretch characteristics.

Crushed and compressed neoprene are two distinctly different materials.

Look here Drysuits made from compressed vs. crushed neoprene

Genuine "crushed neo" is actually just slightly negative, and does not undergo any measurable change in buoyancy with respect to depth.

I'd be very surprised if there is any commercial source for true crushed Neoprene. Making such is not trivial, I know, I've done it.

Re: neoprene

The glue is usually very strong. Stronger than the neoprene. If you try to rip it apart from the seam then you actually end up ripping the neoprene and not the glued joint.
