From Shadow mounts to Metalsub

I decided to get rid of my Shadow mounts and try something new.
The reason for that decision was that I would like to mount some 7 l steel cylinders in the future, and the 3 l steel cylinders I have used with the Shadow mounts so far was sometime a pain in the b*** to put on and off, and you could twist the cylinders if you were a little rough with the unit. So I decided to go for the Metalsub pony cylinder clamps, and it is one of the best investments I have made so far, beside my Narked at 90 Stand

The cylinders are now much easier to take on and off, and it is almost impossible to twist them, the whole unit has become about 0.5-1 kg. heavier and 3 cm wider, nothing I see as a problem.

The first pic. is with Shadow Mounts (don´t mind the welcro strap and the Metalsub attachment it for my HID200)

Very nice......They look a lot like the Norther Diver Pony Tank Brackets.

hello mate,

sure it does look nice. i wanted to have the option of choosing any tank at any place. so i adjusted it with velcro straps, after i saw CV do it. believe me, is very very nice. and you can just pick up any cylinder and just add it on your meg. no need to adjust cylinders, i.e when you go abroad.

i wanted to ask about your tanks? are these 7 litres? how heavy when full? what brand are they? i notice on one picture that the tank is standing. then on the others i see that the bottom is round, so can you explain?

i am after 7 litre tanks, but do not want to go very wide, as i penetrate a lot.

thanks.

The cylinders on the picture are 3 Liters. They are round and can not stand, I´m just holding the one for the photo.
The 7 L I’m going to use is from my old 2x7 twinset, I think they are from FABER, about 58 cm high and 13 cm in diameter, don´t know anything about the weight (yet).
I’ll drop a picture when I get them mounted. (Most likely in the beginning of the new year)

Hi..
Nice photos! It's nice when people do some new things with there MEGs and can illustrate it with photos.
PS. If you get tired of the water you're diving in, you can always come to Bornholm. Just give me a call.

All regards

Re: From Shadow mounts to Metalsub

hello guys,

i am glad you liked the photos. the way i have my set up i can very easily add the S80s or 11.1 Litre tanks. (dont think i'll be needing anything bigger than that).

it would be nice to see some pictures with the 7 litres mounted on. just curious to see how wide it does make the meg...

Re: From Shadow mounts to Metalsub

The metal-to-metal connection systems tend to require a lot of hardware and to be expensive. Some add weight, as well.

I'm up to 1 set of female Shadow Mounts and 3 sets of male, which require 8 SS hose clamps. Adjusting for diving trim with the SMs, and it appears to be true for most metal-to-metal systems, requires multiple dives with small adjustments. Worst, the adjustment for one size tank doesn't seem to be the same for a smaller, larger, heavier or lighter tank. Traveling with gear is difficult enough and certainly complicated by having to set up new tanks before you can get in the water.

The cam-cleat approach requires nothing mounted on the tanks themselves. In addition to using less hardware, they allow you to grab any suitable tank close by and make your dive, not limiting you to only tanks that have been set up specifically to mate with your metal-to-metal connection system. While the cam cleats are usable for just about any size tank, they can even be adjusted for trim at the beginning of your dive -- and underwater -- by your buddy.

Before I saw your photos I had a garage full of cam cleats that I used to put on stage bottles (with a few pounds of lead) to control them during a cave exit when they were "floating" and I was on OC. I had been wondering what to do with them.

Re: From Shadow mounts to Metalsub

One thing that isn't clear to me is how the cam bands attach to the main scrubber cannister. I can see that you have the jubilee bands attached to the cannister and that there appears to be some sort of metal vertical attachment point for the cam bands fixed using these...am I having a blond moment!?!

steve,

no you are not having a blond moment. its an aluminiun piece which holds the straps and the jubilee goes around it to hold it. i have rigged S80s with no problems, except from the weight on your back.

its the best solution i found for me...

i'll take some more photos and post during the weekend if you like.

thanks

Thanks. That would be great. Was this something you had made, or off the shelf?
