Do I have to change?

Hello Megalodon divers

I am a Inspiration Classic diver with HS Explorer + 4th cell. If I want to change to Megalodon, what will I get more in comparision with the Inspiration Vision? What is better in Megalodon? How about the service? Only possible in the US?

Re: Do I have to change?

I had lots of fun with my Inspiration and am not knocking the unit. I changed for the Meg's build quality. My Inspo box was cracking, the cells we a pain to get to if you'd left the special spanner at home and it was a hassle to strip, clean and dry the unit the way I wanted to.

It's like a plastic Energiser torch vs a Maglite, they both work and do the job but the machined aluminium of the Maglite gives me a warmer fuzzier feeling of quality (and perceived durbility) than the moulded plastic.

There are features on the Inspo that I miss or have not fully gotten used to on the Meg but I wouldn't change back.

I think there are newer and more intersting units out now or soon, like the Sentinel and Hammerhead CCR...

On the Meg you would get a HUD that you donīt have on the Inspiration classic, nothing more there. And you can buy a good hud for ~400e.

That build quality is a fact. Inspo seems to be made cheap compared to the Meg. But then how many people have actually broken parts of the Inspo (maybe a few cracked handsets)?

I am only saying that it seems to be able to take a lot of banging considering the looks

Re: Do I have to change?

As a equipment manufacturer its always interesting to note peoples impressions of moulded against machined parts

Show someone a part thats moulded and they often feel it weak and 'toy-like' whereas show someone something machined with its angular profile and sharper un-refined edges and surfaces and they feel its more robust.

Its not always the case.

An AL can on a Rebreather is not justifiable from a strength requirement viewpoint - its a drastic overkill which you pay for in shipping weight.

There yah go!

If Im ever hit in the back by a 5000kg whale whilst wearing a Meg It will be gratifying that the scrubber will likely survive the impact that severed my spine and shattered my rib cage

Every single inspo owner I know has broken clips. Many have cracked the case and have had to completely replace the loom. A couple have cracked the tube off the side of the scrubber.

Now before an "expert" on the Meg claims things break on it too; of course they do. In my experience having spend time diving the Inspo and the Meg, the Meg is a lot more robust and far few things go wrong. In fact, in my experience, fewer things go wrong with it than any other unit I have owned or hung around with.

No doubt others will have other opinions. Have fun deciding

Point taken. Funnily I have not seen any of those here in cold Finland. I have seen broken clips and cracked handsets but that is all. It is true that Meg is more robust than YBOD, there is no point arguing that.

Drmike, is it possibility that the whale will blow up in pieces after hitting the Meg cannister? That would be something that I would like to see on video And maybe a more true life test than the one where a truck runs over your Rebreather

I can confirm a Meg is elephant proof seeing as we had one try to stand on one in Thailand
