Removing Clamps?????????

I was just thinking about removing the two clamps directly behind my wing on the MEG head. These clamps are hard to get on and off when my system is rigged up, and I was thinking that they won't matter.

So here I am asking the question, If I remove them will I have any problems with the head coming off or other problems I havent thought of yet?

Any feed back would be nice.

Thanks.

I’ve seen it done- and seen leaks head-to-can at depth on the rig. I chose not to do it, instead wrestling w/ the clamps in the then configuration. I’ve since moved on to my custom built minimalist carbon backplate/ stand that had, as one of many design goals, latch clearance as a requirement.

Depending on how big the interference is, you could file or Dremel off the inside corner of the latch handle a bit to greatly increase its clearance to your wing/ backplate/ whatever w/o causing any reduction in latch holding power. Just be sure to completely smooth out any sharp edges to prevent cutting your wing.

Good luck.

Re: Removing Clamps?????????

I only use 2 clamps (on the outside) on mine since I got the unit Dec-2006. The last owner dived as such for many years.

So far, I haven't seen any massive leak down to 92m (knock on wood!)

Re: Removing Clamps?????????

Removed one of mine as it was difficult to get to under the dump on the wing. I usually don't bother doing up the other one either as its a PITA so usually dive with just the two outer clips.

Cheers

Re: Removing Clamps?????????

Deepwreck,

I removed mine the week after our class and have never looked back. I even put undersized o-rings on the head so it is easier to remove and still no leaks.

Re: Removing Clamps?????????

I am aware of several people that have tried this. Half of them continue to do it... the other half have had leaking and no longer do it...

Re: Removing Clamps?????????

When you guys say clamps -- are you talking about the clamps that hold the head on the can? Are you considering/already have taken two of them off?

I know someone who broke 2 off and never replaced them. He does a lot of diving too. I'm too chicken myself

Re: Removing Clamps?????????

I took the two behind the backplate off and like the way I don't need to unhook then inorder to get the head off. I found that as long as I pushed the head down all the way before I clamped the head I don't see any movement in the head from then on. I just got back from diving the Norness to 285' and the two clamps held just fine.
