Re: To buy or not to buy?

I sent an email to ISC almost a year ago, and got no response at all, then when I was SERIOUS about buying a Meg, I called...

ISC is probably the most reliable vendor I have ever dealt with, and shy of a few email response issues, (and who really cares, they do receive and act on them in due time) have been more than happy to respond to my needs (including three or four configuration changes over the past two months).

ISC is a stand-up, no nonsense custom rebuilder manufacturer, and as such, they are busy "Building Rebreathers" and working on a bunch of new concept ideas at the same time. If I ever have a problem with a vendor, I contact them and explain my discourse.

Leon, Steve and Jim and the rest of the crew have been more than willing, able and available to take my (many) pesky phone calls, and I have only ordered one Meg. I have even deleted items from my build sheet two months after the fact, and have had no problems doing so.

I have said it before, and I will say it again...

ISC...the "#1 Custom Rebreather Manufacturer"

Re: To buy or not to buy?

FWIW I have never sent an email to ISC but I have called them several times with questions and to order parts. They have always been very helpfull and had the answers I wanted and the parts were in the mail the next morning. Their service is top notch and the Meg...I have no complants about that either.

Re: To buy or not to buy?

Personally, I have not gotten any email reply from ISC after numerous attempts... until recently from Jim Johnson (jimj@customrebreathers.com).

Unfortunately, he replied too late for me to make the bank transfer (while I am already on a business trip) and receive the parts in time to bring back.

Ray,

Email to Jim directly as he seems to be good with communicating via emails.

Or contact either Ron ("RonMicjan" on Rebreather World) who could drive up to ISC to get the parts and ship himself, or Steve ("Steve" on RBW) who could also order for you. And either one could do the x-over course for you.

Re: To buy or not to buy?

Hi, Phi, I have had my say and made peace with Leon, and I suggest that the efforts they are making to be more "Reachable" electronically speak for themselves.

I note with interest that you have removed "Megladon" as a current dived rebreather? Interesting....

It is because I am not diving an actual factory-manufactured Meg as the only part left from the original unit that I bought in December is the can (i.e. AL scrubber cover).

As mentioned previously...
  • CL loop has been replaced with the DT BMCL
  • DSV replaced by Golem BOV
  • Smithers electronic replaced by Shearwater controller
  • Golem radial scrubber
So don't want to misrepresent that fact.

But yes, I am also waiting on the delivery of "something nice"... (don't ask, can't tell )

Phi sorry I have to ask. Wouldn't it have been a bit cheaper to just buy the can?

Regards

Fair question...

Some of the reasons:
  1. I have never seen / touched the Meg before making the purchase, so had no idea what I could or need to modify.
  2. I don't believe that one could simply buy just the can from ISC.
  3. I would still need the lid and most of its parts even to convert to the Shearwater controller. The only 3 parts were removed/replaced were: 1 battery holder, electronic controller in lid and HUD. One of the battery holders is still needed to house the solenoid battery, for example.
  4. Originally, I had thought about crossing over to teach the Meg so need the entire package...
Besides, the component prices aren't as cheap as you would think. I was quite sticker-shocked when trying to order some spare parts.

Not to flog a dead horse here but, ISC has addressed the email "issue" and has now hired extra staff (Jim and others) to make sure emails are responded to in a timely fashion. As always if anyone needs help contacting ISC pm me (or others on the board like Ron) and i can call them for you and hopefully help out.
