Spheres

I am after another set of spheres.

I have heard some people are using a composite sphere, possibly made by Draeger. I believe it is 2L and 300bar.

Does anyone have any information on these? Who is the manufacturer? Model number? Availability? Price? Suitability for use in a Mk15.x?

Are these spheres for BA?

Thanks

Greg

Re: Spheres

do a seach for "carbon fiber jobs" here on RW...

I started a post a while back. Dave Sutton found out the draeger carbon fibers are sold in sets of 3 for mine rescue rig which has been discontinued. their smaller, difficult to find, not designed for UW use, and not cheap...

Re: Spheres

Whilst not an answer to your question Greg, I may have another avenue for you to follow. The tanks used for flotation bags on a couple of maritime use helicopters I have worked on have had tanks that may be adaptable. It is a similar system to an car air bag. Finding out who makes products like these may well be useful.

Re: Spheres

A friend was looking for them a while back so I have found a source that could get those 2L 300bar composite spheres as well as putting DIN valves on them.

Except it is not worth the hassle to get 1-2 spheres/valves and send across the globe, so if there a large demand (10+ spheres, for example) from a group, I could look into it again.

Can't remember the exact cost, but was much less than steel/Inconel spheres.

I'd be interested in 2...........maybe 4 if the price is right. Located in USA if that matters.

Re: Spheres

Inconel Tavco spheres are a Learjet Part. No joke. The emergency nitrogen bottle for the landing gear blowdown system is a Mark-15 sphere with a larger diameter neck. I *think* but am not sure that they *might* take a standard 3/4 inch tank valve. Might be a source for Inconels..... you never know.

I've also seen Tavco steel (parkerized) spheres of exactly the same dimension used on aircraft as hydraulic accumulator bottles, so it's obvious that we just need to expand our search and we'll find the real spheres with a different label on them. I'm talking to a few aircraft scrappers now to get my hands on a few as samples. Might be worth a call to Tavco for 3 liter spheres "for aircraft use" without any mention of rebreathers to see what they say.

Any ideas why a LearJet requires an Inconel pressure vessel?

If I had to make an educated guess, I would suspect it's because Inconel's mechanical properties essentially don't change from extremely high to extremely low temperatures...or because LearJet thought they were cool

Re: Spheres

Or perhaps because the job it is destined for is as an emergency back up system- nitrogen blow down bottle for an otherwise nonfunctional landing gear. It might get used once in the entire life cycles of 100 aircraft, but when it's needed it’s REALLY needed and must be in perfect, un-corroded condition. Remember, we’re talking high-end luxury private jets here. When it comes to protecting his own carcass (at taxpayer and shareholder expense) as far as the CEO is concerned price is no object.
