Question How often do you clean the counterlung

To you MK.x divers,

How often do you remove the center section from the rig and remove the counterlung from the underside of the center section to clean the counterlung on dive trips?

Reason I ask is that I am looking at a couple of different ways of attaching the center section on my BMR 500 to the chassis. Depending on how often the lung needs to be cleaned will determine which route I go.

(no laughing Phi - I know you hate the BMR)

Given that I have no horseshoe board or any electronics on the underside of my center section (just sensors in the center section lid), could I just remove breathing hoses and flush the lung with water every day or so over a 5-7 day dive trip, or should the entire center section be removed every couple of days so the diaphram can be cleaned properly?

As an aside, can I place MK.x under Current rebreather I owm in my profile if it is a BMR - because as someone on here once said it's "the red-headed bastard step child" of the MK series rebreathers ??

Any info is appreciated

Marc

Re: How often do you clean the counterlung

The horseshoe board on my 15.5 is potted, so I flush the lung nearly every dive... About half the time with disinfectant. I still take my counterlung off every few weeks for a good cleaning, drying, and inspection. I do the full routine when I know that my rig is going to st for a while.

I'm in the water a lot, so my routine may be overkill for some.

Aloha,
charlie

Re: How often do you clean the counterlung

I just love to take my MK 15 apart and look at all the cool pieces and parts. The counterlung gets cleaned regularly as a by product of my "touch the shiny parts" fetish. I never could leave anything well enough alone.

That was the one procedure I used to hate doing because I felt it was too easy to damage the MK-15 rubber CL if you accidentally brush too hard against the sharp corner edges of the ears where the CS is bolted to.

And given the exorbitant cost of a new CL quoted to me (US$800), I tried to minimize that risk as much as possible and only took it apart to clean the CL occasionally.

Recently, Colin (in Oz) PM'ed and quoted a more reasonable price for CL (forgot it now) - in case anyone is looking for one.

Now, I clean and disinfect my DT BMCL after each week-end diving with my eyes closed...

On a trip, never. At home, once in a blue moon. It's easy to flush it out with diluted Miltons whilst it's still in-situ.

You don't have to take it apart to clean it...
