those neat-o drager carbon fiber jobs...

looking for a source for those drager carbon fiber spheres.
I know their capacity is less than regular spheres, but... just looking at them as an option...

anyone got a set of inconels they would like to donate to me?

You’re a pain; you know that!
I decided that this would be a fun SE search; three cups of coffee later.
I went through six different search variances.
Everything is either- sub related, mil-spec, rocket, or freaking ancient.

However, this looks promising…
Link- M S C D Co Inc
I am not saying that they have spheres to sell- but they might provide some further direction.

Good Luck.
Now I am back from Mexico we need to go for a beer.
Later, Andrew

Re: those neat-o drager carbon fiber jobs...

The carbon wound spheres are a component of the Draeger Air Boss PSS 500 SCBA. The system uses three of them in a cluster on the back of a firefighter. They cylinders themselves are furnished with DIN connectors. Sphere clusters (3 arranged together) are sold as a change-out item for the system. Buy two clusters, split them up, and you have 6 spheres. They are 2 litre water volume as opposed to 3 for steel or inconels. Working pressure is 4500 PSI as compared to 3000 for the metal ones. Nominal free gas capacity is the same, albeit at 50% higher working pressure. Any Draeger SCBA dealer should be able to supply them to the end user.

Re: those neat-o drager carbon fiber jobs...

Thanks Dave,
Are they compatible with a salt water environment? I can't recall exactly but thought I read something about moisture penetrating the outer layers or neck threads and causing corrosion on the internal flask (if it has an aluminium sphere underneath - I'm guessing here)
Cheers,
Sandy

Dunno. Dreager would say "No". They are probably fine though, designed for harsh environments, etc. I'd keep them from getting dropped and would "use 'em and see". I know that they have been used before by guys who could not source metal spheres. Might help the ass-down trim of the Mark-15 too, at the expense of needing to add more weight elsewhere to the thing.

Re: those neat-o drager carbon fiber jobs...

Not long ago (when those MK15’s were on fleabay) they were still in Luxfer’s catalog, in the life support section. May still be. I went so far as to call Luxfer & ask where they could be bought. Was told they were not currently in stock, but they had a small (100 or so? I forget.) number of aluminum cores they’d build up if I wanted them all & not just two. I didn’t have the spare $100K………

May be we could "leverage" the pocket book of Rebreather World members to get those 100 spheres made and sell thru the RBW Store...

Re: those neat-o drager carbon fiber jobs...

I've checked with Dreager US. The PSS 500 has been discontinued and no spares are available. bummer.
Anyone know of a fire or police dept that bought these and may be getting rid of them as they are no longer supported by the manufaturer?

About page 32 or so.... "sphere pack" as a spare part. Distributors still have the parts. This is just from one distributor. About $2000 for 3 spheres.
