If you're going to do it go for a nice toolroom lathe this will give nice repeatable tolerances and who knows what other avenues this might open up for you

Agreed. If I decide to invest time and effort I might as well be able to reproduce my efforts. I'll hopefully get a chance to talk to some machine/engineering folks this summer. Cheers.
