CL Case modifications?

I am thinking of hacking (carefully cutting) a couple of extra holes in my CL Case on the wing side of the case opposite the CL connections to greatly increase the ease and speed of fitting and removal of the CL's.

I think they'd need to be abit further apart than the holes in the back of the case and about 4inch diameter to allow the lungs then your hand through to fit/remove them.

I was under the impression Jetsam where looking to make this mod on the latest CK's, does anyone have a recent unit with this mod for a picture? or has anyone done it themselves and have any advice, cautionary or otherwise?

Thanks,
BEN

Re: CL Case modifications?

Ben, If your hands are the same size as mine, you might want to do this to the counterlung case holes:

I could NEVER get my hands in there - The ENTIRE time I've owned my KISS I have always removed the head to remove the counterlungs. This means unscrewing the O2 line and the DIL line, and unplugging the head. For me, it takes less than a minute, and is WAY easier then trying to futz with the lungs with the head in place. Also - The added benefit is that putting the CL's back in is MUCH easier this way.

Re: CL Case modifications?

My case is pretty new and I think it’s the latest design from Jetsam, however it was still a pain in the fingers to get the CL’s on and off so I took the good old Dremel and did some hacking and slashing.
Here are a few pics of the case
The large holes on the front (diver side) are original
I just cut off the top on the back and rounded it

Thanks but thats abit overkill for me... I would love to remove the head but the bolts on mine are badly stuck, I really want to remove it and refit with a quick release (like a Metalsub pony bracket or similar)

Ideally like to follow that with a SS spine equipped with a handle on top but thats a whole other project...

Re: CL Case modifications?

Hello,

I have a unit that was shipped a month ago. It has the recent hose and other mods, but doesn't have the additional holes. We also have a unit shipped a 10 days ago, but I haven't opened the box. Perhaps it will be opened this week.

Sincerely,

-p

Interesting, thanks Paul... I suppose they could be "using up stock" even if they have changed it, be interested whats in your second box!

FWIW I have the Miflex O2 hose upgrade too, Very nice- except the head elbow supplied won't go into the head- wrong thread, so I'm abit stuck for the minute... Jetsam are of course looking into it with their usual efficency, so I doubt it'll slow me down!

Re: CL Case modifications?

A long flat head screw driver to "lock" and "unlock" the collar has always worked for me. I guess i have never really had issues getting the bags on. A little silicone grease goes a long way to get them to slide on.

My vote is with Cam's method. I've never been able to tighten the counter lungs by hand (unit 99). Mind you take care not to over tighten and crack the counterlung ring. Never happened, never dived with it that way .

Re: CL Case modifications?

I have seen a couple of cracked CL rings using the screwdriver method- the CL connection doesn't need to be rock solid tight, its not under any twisting force... well mine at least has never come undone with little more than finger tight. However, the screwdriver has easy access!

I always lube then slide the CL onto the connector- push it far forwards then tighten the nut- I try to make sure the nut doesn't have to pull the CL onto the connector- I think its that loading that can break it, just a hunch.

Re: CL Case modifications?

Hello,

Well it appears I'm somewhat less observant than your average door post (which is dimmer than the offspring of a door knob married to a bed post)....

On my CK which shipped a month ago there are indeed two holes in the case opposite the CL mounts. I'll try to get some pictures for you in the next few days. Gotta dig out a camera and remove the plate and stand.
