![]() | Re: Shipping Crates/Cases As a brand new Optima owner I have to wonder where my thinking is wrong. I was looking for a sturdy, light, maximum-legal-size carry on to pack my kit. I had no intention of checking my unit when I fly. Does everyone put their unit in checked baggage and just trust that it will arrive ok? Dave - Thanks for the tip on the boxes and zip ties. I was wondering what you did about TSA inspections. Is there any way to substitute TSA approved locks like the Pelilock for the zip ties? Or is the hasp just not long enough? At least you had nail clippers. I had to chew mine off! Ken |

Just out of curiosity, may I ask how much did the shipping cost? teoman |

I have about 20 or so boxes, and at most 3 tops. Save a few bucks. Yes, I simply drop my crap off at the check-in counter, get my claim tags, and walk to the gate with my briefcase and a cup of coffee. The lower-profile you are the less likely you are to have a problem. NO Pelican cases for me, in addition to being heavy, they shout 'expensive stuff to steal here!'. NO dive stickers, etc. Don't advertise. I just stencil with paint my name, address, and cellphone number on the fish-tote and check them in. They are so low-profile that they look like catalogs or whatever being shipped. Carry a rebreather as carry-on luggage? Get real.... do you REALLY want to hassle with TSA at security and need to carry all that crap? I have homeowners insurance... steal my rig and I get a new rig. I'm not a skycap, so I don't carry boxes thru airports. Never lost a thing yet. Dunno about the TSA padlocks, there's no 'hasp' to speak of, the zip-ties simply tie the handle of the lid to the handle of the box. I suppose you could drill a pair of matching holes in the box handle and top handle and see about how a lock fits, as there are many TSA padlocks available from different vendors. Shipment of the Mark-15 to California cost me about $60. Shipment of the same weight to South Africa three weeks ago cost nearly $450. Don't know to Turkey. Dave

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Shipping Crates/Cases My fish totes have arrived from Industrial Marine in RI. Just like Dave said, the IDA-71 slides in for a perfect fit. The total weight with scrubbers filled would come in about 3 pounds overweight. The allowable weight on West Jet is 60 pounds max. so I'll put the O2 tank in one of our other bags. It weighs 10 pounds so I'll easily be under the limit. As an interesting side note, I'm taking a small bag of tools (screwdriver, adjustable wrench, allen wrench etc.) in case of any minor problems. I bought an adjustable spanner and discovered that it's perfect for popping the lid catches on the fish totes. It will travel with the tools and the knife to cut off the cable ties. Thanks for that tip also, Dave. Hank

![]() | Re: Shipping Crates/Cases The 3 fish totes I ordered from Industrial Marine also arrived this week. Very, very nice. Without the lids on, perfect for hauling gear back and forth to the boat/shop/dive site. Lids on, checked luggage. One thing, though. Shipping charge for these from RI to NJ was $85 - more than the cost of the totes! Still a bargain, though. Especially since I had been thinking about getting a couple of Storm or Pelican cases at around $270 each! -- Art |

UPS? Man! The entire thing could not have weighed 20 pounds... and cost maybe $15 to ship. Ya'll should have just called me. I bring them back to NJ from RI every time I come back. Pick them up at the LDSOH in person next time. You can buy them in Brielle also, at Fishermans Supply. Dave .
