Re: Shipping Crates/Cases

The price in the link is AMAZING, quite a bit less than I paid. Retail for it on the Canadian list is CDN $439.

Here's a pic from the above website. Price listed there is 219. But these types of cases weigh a ton. 30lbs empty for this one.

They're rugged but are not great for travelling unless you want to pay a lot for excess baggage charges.

Re: Shipping Crates/Cases

Data Point: Just shipped a Mark-15 by FEDEX without even a "Fragile" sticker on it from New Jersey to California, in one of the fish-totes with snap-on lid that I suggest, and it arrived (naturally) in perfect shape. The totes weigh under 5 pounds with lid, and cost less than $25.00. I tie-wrapped the thing thru the handle-hole (tie-wraps the lid on) and ran a cheap ratchet-strap thru the handles and around the bottom just to make sure. Braces and Belt for a $15K piece of equipment.

Seems that compared to the UK or Pelican boxes, that this is a few $ saved, and (far more significantly) about 25 pounds of extra gear available on an airline trip. Plus the totes are wonderful for washing gear and for leak-testing rigs. Fill 'em up with a garden hose. When I travel I take two, one for the rig, and one for everything else, clothes included. Add a pair of thin duffle bags for 'onsite' dive gear and clothes and you're in business.

The UK cases are great if you really want to protect stuff. It just seems that they are too heavy for the airlines, and too bulky for the dive boat. Mine live in my garage... collecting dust. On the other hand I not only suggest but also provide loaner fish totes aboard the boat for divers to use to keep their gear organized. Most everyone who uses one for a day buys it and takes it home, and when they return they want to buy 6 more. They are that good.

Re: Shipping Crates/Cases

Don't undervalue the weight thing. I have a 1650 case that the revo fits in nicely but it weighs almost 25#...Some international flights won't let you take overweight at any price. The fish tote is light and tough, its my luggage of choice now.

Duh! NOW I remember why my tote-pile in the garage is smaller!

Another convert.

Re: Shipping Crates/Cases

Where (in Canada) would one find these magical totes?

Re: Shipping Crates/Cases

They are as common as seagull-crap at any commercial fishing dock. I think I once wrote "At any commercial fishing dock, and if in doubt follow the rank smell upwind and then look for well fed cats". These places all have a store tucked away where the commercial fishermen buy foul weather gear, knives, line, etc. Tourists NEVER go to these spots, so ask someone walking by who looks homeless. He's a commercial fisherman and he'll know.

They are a Canadian product. Ought not be too tough to find. NOTE WHEN BUYING: The tops are NOT common on the docks, and some places selling them do not even stock them. The top makes the box into what we need, so MAKE SURE you don't order just the box. NOTE ALSO: There are a few makers, all interchange, but the ROPAK ones are the best. There IS a difference, and some of the other makers are just different enough that the tops do not lock on. DO NOT buy the "Holy" ones as they are called, you do not want the holes in them. They come drainable or non drainable. Get the non-drainable ones. They are designed to carry 150 pounds of fish to market, so they are tough. If you want to toss a thin foam pad into the bottom, go ahead. I use drysuit underwear to pack the rigs for travel.

Let's see:

I buy mine from:

Wilcox Marine Commercial Fishing Supply

(note company logo and compare to logo on the shirt I'm wearing in my avitar...) NOTE: I would CALL THEM and not email them. They are VERY helpful folks. While you are at it, ask for a few of the "Orange handle serrated knives with the (sold seperately) flat black plastic sheaths". Buy... oh, dunno: 4 knives and 2 sheaths for yourself and one each for every dive buddy you want to keep from stealin' your favorite dive new knife. Think they are under $10 each and are SUPERB. Just trust me here.

Others:

Ropak Canada Inc., Springhill, NS on Canadian Trade Index Industrial Directory of Companies

Ropak Packaging Northwest Division

Ropak Tote Box

International Ropes, Marine and Fishing Supplies

Just Google "Ropak Fish Tote" and you'll find them. Buy a few, they stack or nest (turn 180 degrees) and they can be shipped to you nested and taped together as one item UPS. Or.... you could come and dive on EXPLORER and be issued one. Or do like Kevin (Fireman) did: Drive 800 miles in a rented van, sleep on my couch for a night, raid the garage and drive home. I had 50 of these things last year, think I'm down to an even 20 or so now. I give them away like lollypops. Buy a few of the orange clam baskets while you are at it. Don't worry why, just buy them and you'll find uses for them. I even use them for my dirty laundry hamper... don't leave home without several.

Re: Shipping Crates/Cases

Thanks Dave,

This looks like it would work:

fish boxes fish crates fish totes, Pacific Injection Molding Ltd. Specializing in plastic totes, crates and containers for use in agricultural business and industrial business.

This does not:

Orangefish

Now what do I do with the big UK box?

Maybe I can come and dive on Explorer when I have a few hours on my new Rebreather. Until then, I am mostly a menace to society. As for driving 800 miles in a rented van etc., sounds like a Country and Western song in the making.

Orangefish tote...err.... does not.

I edited the post to remove the Pacific totes and to add the Ropak ones. Suggest the Ropak as they fit the lids better.

Feel free to send the UK boxes to me as a thank you for saving you all of that extra cost for carrying them on the airline.... .
They can gather dust here with mine. Label them & UPS to: Capt. Dave, Trawler EXPLORER, Stone Cove Marina, Salt Pond Road, Wakefield RI.

Come to think about it, I've found Kevin sleeping on my couch both here at the LDSOH and on the couch of EXPLORER.
Hmmmm..... do you think he comes here just for the boxes?

Smile,

Dave

Re: Shipping Crates/Cases

I am partial to totes as well (or the big rubbermaid boxes), but if you are looking for a light bag that is travel freindly, check out the Osprey 'space station'. I was recently provided their 140 cublic liter version for a gear review. The thing is HUGE, so I'm sure I'm capable of going over my weight allowance while flying, but for the size of the bag it only weights 11 pounds, and I guarantee it'll hold your rig and all of your clothes. It's suported by an aluminum frame much like backpackers frames and has wheels:

Space Station 140 by Osprey and other Wheeled Duffels backpacks.
