Hi from California

*peeks in and looks around shyly*

So, I'm not exactly a diver...yet...I've *wanted* to be a diver since I was a little kid, but I probably won't have the time and money until I finish college. But I'm a tech-geek, so I'd kinda like to get to know the equipment as much as possible even before I start training and using...

HI JC,

Welcome aboard

Say, come on up the coast, transfer to Humboldt State University- we've got a great diving program and you can take the other school stuff when you aren't diving. Great cold water, big waves and abalone!

We need the students!

Best Regards,
Tim

I think my family would strongly disapprove of me leaving Caltech to chase good diving...but thanks anyhow!

They *do* have a basic SCUBA course here as one of our options for PE; I'll probably take that and go from there. I'll want to switch to a rebreather as soon as possible though. I know they're more expensive and require careful maintenance, but the principle of the thing is just plain elegant.

while i grew up as the son of a poor s. cal diver, i took abalone sandwiches to school because we could not afford Pb&j. by the way nobody will trade abalone for any thing when they are eight years old.since you are going to cal tech you should be able to build your own rebreather. you have the pool for testing. you have access to the machine shop, and all have to do is convince Dave that you are crazy enough, to build it yourself.
i built my first unit as student of cal maritime.

Not everyone who goes to Caltech is an engineer, sillyhead. I'm a biology major, although I suppose I could try to convince some of my friends to help...hmm, a computer science major, an electrical engineering major and a physics major should about do the job.
