Hi from Dublin, Ireland

Hi, I'm based in Dublin, Ireland.

Been diving on and off since 1999 with about 130 dives under my belt (roughly 50:50 split between warm and cold water) e.g. Dublin bay, Kilkee, Islandmagee, Portacloy, Killary, Kilkieran Bay, Maharees, St. Johns Point, Inishbofin, Slieve League/Malinbeg, Saltees (all in Ireland) and abroad e.g. Mallorca, Cyprus, Lanzarote, Malta, Queensland GBR.

I'm currently a member of the BSAC club - Dublin University Sub Aqua Club. PADI Rescue/BSAC Sports Diver and have done TDI Advanced Nitrox which lead me on to this lark.

I'm just at the curious stage with respect to rebreathers. I've been reading this forum a bit and thinking about the choices ahead of me. There's some great info here about CCR vs OC and the practicalities, costs associated etc.

I see there are quite a few APD Inspiration Classics coming up for sale. Some are brand new from just the beginning of this season. I guess the sellers are moving to Inspiration Visions (are they THAT good compared to the Classic?) but they must be losing $$$$ with the resale value. For a rebreather newbie is it worth picking up a relatively cheap second hand Classic or saving the bucks and going straight to Vision?

Cheers, Stephen

Hi, Welcome to Rebreather World!
You'll find loads of info in here, but never be afraid to ask, there is a wealth of knowledge and opinion on here, great camaradarie and very little p*ss taking!
Remember that you aren't stupid if you don't know the answer, but maybe if you don't ask!

I learnt on a Classic Inspiration, and to do the vision "upgrade" was another 2 day course. I suppose it is different if you learn on a Vision from the off. Looking at price differential though, you get a lot more for your buck going down the route of a classic "cast off", and getting proficient on that, and then making an informed choice about going for an upgrade to the vision electronics. There are folks on here that will advise to go to Hammerhead electronics, over the AP offerings, so I would say, get a cheap classic as a starter. But that's just my two penneth!
Cheers
Chris

Hi Steve,

You have come to the right place for CCR info and opinions from a broad range of different experiences.

There are currently several Inspiration Classics available in Dublin due to the imminent arrival of new Inspiration Visions.

If you can budget for a new Vision (about 8,000 euro)then go for it, otherwise consider a used Classic that would probably cost you between 3750 euro to 5000 euro.

There are a few things besides condition and age to check on a Classic that would effect the price and suitability:

1/ Back lit Handsets

2/ Harness and counter-lung size.

3/ APDiving ADV Fitted.

4/ Cells last replaced?

Give me a shout if you need any help 'checking out' a unit here in Ireland and beware of units that sometimes come up on Ebay, check it's not a scam before you buy.

Welcome to Rebreather World.

Regards

Re: Hi from Dublin, Ireland

Having owned both a classic and a vison, I can say IMHO that the vision is superior in virtually everyway. I would never be interested in diving the classic again. If money is not an object, go for the vision. If you can't afford the vision, the classic is still superior to most other makes out there.

Just my .02

Hi Stephen.

Sounds like you're on the road to a Kato..... FWIW, I'd say second hand represents good value and Barrie's offer is worth taking up. At least this way you'll get first hand knowledge.

Oh and remember, opinions are like arseholes.... everyones got one

/Zak
