True - then there is the age-old debate about whether it is irresponsible not to have a bail-out armchair and just fly the couch alpinist,

the dilemma of how to tell whether the cushions are too old and what replacement strategy should be adopted for them (all at once or one at a time? When they stop feeling so soft and comfy, or not until the springs show through?) and should the beginner couch-diver be taught to stay on the couch or encouraged to hop into an armchair at the first sign of trouble? Its all very perplexing.

And I never did master the skill of flying the couch semi-closed - I tended to find the stuffing fell out.

Still, lots of scope for self-expression: my couch is going to have a purple cover on it

I usually recommend changing the pillows before the springs show. You don't want to punture the counterlungs or any private parts.

Hmmm... I wonder how well they would backmount... Have you tried? Just thinking it would be a very robust design for a bailout Rebreather...

Just a thought, but have you considered using a "packed away" set of counterlungs like the commercial bailout breathers do? The lungs are held in a harness (much like an inflatable life jacket) and are deployed by pulling a toggle. May be interesting.
