Just getting started with lots of questions!

I am just at the beginning stage (newb deciding on which CCR to go with) and would welcome any and all advice. There are certainly good things to be said about a number of units available today however I am leaning towards the Meg or CK.

I am TriMix certifed, have done many of the ship wrecks in the NE (live in NJ) and travel to dive destinations several times throughout the year.

Re: Just getting started with lots of questions!

welcome , ALEX

when you travel, are you doing "tech" or recreational ?

Based on the fact that you are doing so much travel and you have a aboundance of cash.

I would get a Meg and a sport Kiss.

the bases are covered. welcome aboard!

Re: Just getting started with lots of questions!

Yes well there are times when traveling for work I can squeeze in some play time. So your vote is Meg. I certainly would appreciate your views regarding what makes the Meg a better choice.

Thanks............/Alex

Re: Just getting started with lots of questions!

Alex,

First and foremost, welcome to Rebreather World. As you have certainly noticed, this IS the best site in the world for rebreather information.

We have great articles in our Library section, thanks to the generosity of the authors, and the hard work of Miss Lou! Read through those, and you will find a wealth of information.

Secondly, the choice of "Which Rebreather?" is a very personal one. First having identified the type of diving you do most, you need to examine the specifics of the major rebreather units available, and try to decide which will fit the bill for you. Finally, you can come to our members and ask very pointed questions, if those answers are not readily apparent.

It is not an easy task to make that one, right decision, but, we are here to help!

Again, welcome to Rebreather World, and welcome to the "Dark Side" of diving, young Jedi!

Re: Just getting started with lots of questions!

Hey Alex:

The Units to look at would be as follows (all of these companies are real and liquid, basically they will be around for a while):

1) Meg
2) Insperation
3) Optima

I have 2 insperations (although only one is operational) and have never had a single problem with them in caves or Long Island (NY and NJ) wreck dives to over 300'. The unit isn't perfect by any means but it works, there are several things that i view as design flaws and have decided to move on to a MEG. with HH electronics, Cis Lunar scrubber and a couple small modifications I have in mind.

For what you want I vote MEG. its a great product, I have been on one but have never owned one.

There are other VERY good units out there (Boris, Cis Lunar, MK 15, MK 15.5), however all of these are Big, and / or require extensive maintenance and/or are out of the US, so svc. and Maint. COULD be an issue. Oh and there all 15,000 US+++ by the time your done with training and extras, its 20K US.

I like the Boris and will prob. get one as well.

Cheers

J

Re: Just getting started with lots of questions!

This question has been asked many times (I asked, too). Run a search, and you will get some great information from that.

If you are lucky enough to attend an Advanced Diver Magazine demo, that will be a great way to see a few units, and you will even be able to test dive. Attending one of these demo days finally gave me the confidence to decide in favor of the Dive Rite Optima.

Welcome aboard!

Re: Just getting started with lots of questions!

Welcome aboard, you will see that you will get lots of help from people. We as a community probably dive every rebreather out there today So the information and knowledge is out there.

I have got a Meg, i used to own a Classic KISS and i sold that, not because i was not happy with it, but because i needed the money to get my Meg. And i am very happy with the unit and i do not think i will ever get rid of it...

Re: Just getting started with lots of questions!

Thank you all for your insight, encouragement and advice. I have been looking over many of the discussion forums and find, for the most part, whatever CCR unit a person has they are positive about it with a salting of pragmatism.
