| Re: Hello from Papeete [quote=LoloTahiti]Travelling to the islands is a bit more difficult. There is only one airline Air Tahiti, and they can be really stupid with things they don't understand like lime. You are allowed 10 kg luggage, with an extra 10 kg if you have an international ticket and another 5 kg extra if you can prove you're a diver. That would make it 25 kg in your case. Wow, 25 kgs total? That seems, ummm, impossible for an international traveler. Will Air Tahiti allow you to pay extra for extra wt/bags? Is there some way around this other than shipping by boat and wasting a bunch of time? But -warm, great viz, big animals. Sounds better than Cocos. Hmmm -Andy |

Yes, you can pay extra for extra luggage or send your diving gear by fret (which is basically the same plane but cheaper for some reason). It will cost you about 1$ per kg, and you need to do that at least one hour before the plane leaves, but you can do it the day before for ex.Quote: (Originally Posted by silent running) But -warm, great viz, big animals. Hmmm -Andy Well, I wouldn't say that. There are two destinations in the Pacific that are considered better : - The Galapagos : everything we have plus the diving iguanas, otter, whale sharks, etc., - Cocos : it's probably not as easy to access and as confortable, but quite probably the ultimate diving experience (for animals) ... |

Don't you have to pay import taxes and customs if you send goods as freight? |

Not so bad, as on the return there's no sorb to bring back. I love that about CCR diving.Well, I wouldn't say that. I dunnno, the Galapagos viz is not so great and water temps are generally colder than I like. I'll take Great Hammers, warm water and good viz over diving Iguanas, any day. Plus much better topside scenery in FP than Galapagos. I think that the number of species of sharks at Cocos is probably not much higher, maybe lower than the best parts of FP. I've never heard of Great Hammers being seen at Cocos. I bet FP is no more expensive than Cocos. Thanks again for the info Lolo. -Andy |

These are internal planes, on which you can put freight, from Tahiti ti Rangiroa for ex, so you don't have to pay anything to the customs. When you arrive in French Polynesia however, with a rebreather for instance, they make you pay the import taxes, and you only get them back when you leave ... |

Good to know. That certainly sounds like a viable option. When you arrive in French Polynesia however, with a rebreather for instance, they make you pay the import taxes, and you only get them back when you leave ... |
