Hello from NJ

Been surfing this board for the past few months, when a few of the members here planted the rebreather idea in my head after a Block Island trip in July.

I've been diving for a little over 3 years, have a little over 200 dives, most of them up here in the Northeast.

Diving OC now, but plan to make the switch to an SK this season.

Then in a few years, depending on the diving I'm doing at the time and any new developments in the rebreather world I may pick up a Meg.

Grunz,

Welcome aboard Rebreather World. You have already found out that the folks here have more knowledge, collectively, than anywhere else on the planet, when it comes to Rebreather's. Glad you are with us!

Re: Hello from NJ

Have been diving CCR Sport Kiss and Evolution for past 6 months. Would love to meet other CCR divers in NJ for a day at Dutch Springs in the Spring. I just returned from Coco Islands aboard the Okeanos Aggressor and they did very little to support any rebreather diving. In fact, the Captain did not permit me diving my Sport Kiss, even though they have 100% O2 aboard for nitrox.

Any type of rebreather diving in Panama is not there yet! Lucky if you can find air compressors in Santa Catalina, Panama where boats depart for Isla Coiba. However, great diving around Coiba.

Contact me if your interesting in buddy for CCR diving in NJ / NY.

Re: Hello from NJ

Ok, finally got instant email notifications working.

Thanks for the warm welcome. God help me I've found another scuba message board I'm addicted to!

That sucks! After traveling all that way with your kit, you were forced to dive OC?

I can understand not everyone is set up to support them, but outright not letting you dive your rig is BS.

No captain can control what you do when your down there anyway, whether you're on CCR, SCR, or OC. I'm sure plenty of these boats that don't allow rebreathers have allowed a bad, unpreparred, unsafe, etc. OC diver or two. But then again, no matter how good of a diver you are, rebreathers are death machines, right?

I think I may have met you at Dutch. Were you diving the SK towards the end of the summer (maybe Labor Day weekend), set up by TSC?

Will do. What boats do you normally use. Which boats around here are rebreather friendly? I know the Independence II is, also the Sea Turtle out in Montauk, but that's a hike. Great boat though, and some great diving out there, and those guys and Rob Infante are the Dark Lords of the Rebreather who turned me down the dark path!

I've heard that the Outlaw is a no rebreather boat. But other than those few, I don't really know when way or the other.

One of the guys in my group may take the class with me. And a few of the TSC guys are diving the KISSes, but other than that I don't know too many rebreather divers around here.

That other guy would be me! I've been lurking soaking up info as well. As soon as the motorcycle is sold the SK will be ordered!

Re: Hello from NJ

Did you two order your units and get your training yet? While we have not met, we obviously dive the same boats. My KISS ships at the end of the week. I know I will need much post class practice, so if your headed to Dutch, let me know.

I've heard that too but asked a regular on the Outlaw if it was true and they said they've seen plenty of Rebreather's on board and has never heard one word about RBs not being welcome.

Anyone have a concrete example of being refused on the Outlaw?

I'm in NJ as well and would welcome an Rebreather at Dutch.

Outlaw

I got word from a friend that works with the Outlaw. He says that the boat is Rebreather friendly. If you have questions, the captain can be reached at captaingeezer@juno.com.

Onetime,
My class is schedule for mid June. My guess is that late June early July, I'm going to spend a lot of time at Dutch. PM you then.

Re: Hello from NJ

One week and counting!

Got my unit and all the extra bits I need, except for a few hoses I'm going to swap out for different lengths. I leave for the Saint Lawrence on the 19th.

I don't think Natural ordered his yet. He was orignally shooting to be in the same class as me, but I haven't even seen him on the board in a while.

BUT...

We're thinking of changing our club to Wreck Valley KISS divers!

There are about 6-7 of us in our area doing the training in the next few weeks.

The Block Island trip I'm doing in July changed from me being the one green rebreather diver on the trip to having only one OC guy on the boat!

I've heard that Kim said this is the most units they've sold in a year.
