Greetings

Greetings everyone,...

Figured I'd jump over here from TDS to learn more... Been diving OC for ~3 years now, a few AdvNitrox/Deco dives in the past year,... Tons of dving in the edge of traditional recreational ranges... (~100-30'). No caves - yet.

Buddy of mine has his heart set on an Inspiration. Saw a few in action the past few months on the boats. Attended the ADM 'lecture' up in Gainesville last month and saw a few units at the Florida Dive Show - has me giving some serious thought with the prospect of helium in my future...

All sorts of questions running through my head and trying to understand implications...

eCCR vs. mechanical
Micropore Canister vs. Packing Sorb
Overshoulder vs. Back Mounted lungs.
AL vs. ST bottles
Bailout - how many tanks would my typical dive involve.
Quantifying deco benefits of constant P02 w/ in deeper dives

Right now - O2ptima and Classic KISS are in focus.

-Tim

Tim,

First, welcome aboard Rebreather World. This is the best source in the world for information and networking when it comes to rebreather diving.

We are glad that you are interested in coming to the "Dark Side", young Jedi!

If you have not read it, Mastering Rebreathers by Jeff Bozanic, available from Best Publishing, is a good read to give you a general understanding of the field.

Dive in here, read our articles, try the search function for the topics you mention above, and keep an open mind as you do. Our folks here are friendly, and very willing to share information, but they do have their own "pet" rebreathers that they (understandably) champion!

Two things to remember here. A rebreather will give you warm, moist gas, and lots of it. It will also save on your helium bills, and back strain.

Again, welcome aboard, and if I or any of the Rebreather World staff can help you, feel free to ask.

Rob

Re: Greetings

Hi how are you?

well the questions you brought up are a continous soursce of debate, but FYI here is my take on the issue (s):

1) ECCR vs. Mech.- There is no question in my mind that I prefer an ECCR, they are easier to calibrate and a generally much tougher, eccr units tend to require less "fidelling" with.

2)Canister vs. self packing: The idea of a canister, cost aside is quite apealing (perfect pack every time, no thought or time required.........at least in theory), however the durations are very POOR (the test data lack consistency in my opinion, go to micropore's site). Self Packing is more economical and durations are better, ANYONE can easilly master packing a canister WITH PATIENCE AND PRACTICE, so I prefer self packing.

3)Over the shoulder vs. Back mounted: I have been on both, I like the idea of enclosed CL's, but Over the sholder designs offer better WOB most of the time and are accessable during the dive. I think this is best left to personal preferance..........I'm still not sure what I like more, and I've been on Rebreather's for over 9 years...on and off

4)Al. vs. Steel: I have always liked steel, I don't mind heavier rigs. I HAT A WEIGHT BELT, and havn't had one in over 10 years. With steel low on the unit balance becomes an issue, but thats easilly managed.

5)Bailout: at Rec. depths with not A ton of Deco, and Overfilled OMS 45 is more than enough

6)At rec. limits constant PO2 diving gets you out of the water faster.

As far as units go they all have there storng and weak points, I like the MEG. with hammerhead electronics, but there are a number of new units coming to market soon.

Hope this helps,

Cheers
