| My name is Chris and I live in Pennsylvania, USA. I've been diving since 2005; took an open water scuba class in college for phys ed. I have had my advanced open water cert since march of 2006 (ice diving). My instructor at the time was purchasing a rebreather, I guess that is what sparked my interest. And now after spending a lot of money buying a lot of gear, I am now reconsidering the CCR. I have an advanced open water cert. with enriched air diver cert. through PADI. I do alot of quarry dives and some east coast wreck dives (NJ and NC). I have been reading alot of the posts on here about the different rebreather manufacturers and find this type of diving interesting. I think my biggest fear is that I am going to get a unit that I am going to spend a fortune buying, then spend a mint to upgrade. Suggestions? ![]() Thanks for any help in advance and thanks for listening. |

Suggestions? Technology keeps improving the units. So, just assume that there will be upgrades along the way, and factor some extra costs for the upgrades into your diving expenses. If you keep waiting for the "perfect" unit to come onto the market that won't ever require upgrades, you will never make the switch. Buy your unit, enjoy it, use it, and deal with the upgrades as they come along. They are usually worth it and improve your dive experience enough to make them worth doing.![]() Next, buy a unit from a company that has a good and fair policy regarding upgrading units. Ask about these policies before buying the unit. Run some searches here to see about how companies have handled service and upgrade issues and costs to get an idea about realistic issues that can emerge. I have been very pleased with the way that the manufacturer of my unit has treated these issues. |
