Soon to be new Optima Diver

So just recieved my Optima from board member IDS_Bill and everything looks great. IDS_Bill took extra care in packaging and everything was included as stated and even some extras that I wasn't counting on (like SAFT batteries, offset D rings, extra case cover. Its a metal handset Optima and I can't wait to get her wet. Course that might be a few months as training around me (Chicago) and free time might have her pushed towards the end of summer. Plus I hear I might need a card with Adv Nitrox on it first.

I got hooked on rebreathers long ago, and after trying units out in the pool and looking at the technology I think the Optima is a good match for me. So I'll prob be looking for training locally before flying out for it. By locally I mean within road trip distance so that prob means WI for me.

In the mean time while she set in the room, anything I can do to make extend her life? I'm guessing if I can spare the space leave her unpacked and covered? Close off any openings to the head and hoses so no creepy crawlers get a new home in her?

Excellent choice in Rebreather.

Make very sure that all the parts are fully dry before closing up for storage. I was told to leave dissassembled for storage. That way the o-rings will not develop any flat spots. I leave mine in a storm case and just inspect for cockroaches and such before assembly.

Re: Soon to be new Optima Diver

Congratulations on getting the Optima!

I've had mine since August of 2007 and I love it. Been diving it every chance I get, which is usually every weekend, weather permitting of course.

Definitely keep an eye on the Optima and Florida S.C.R.U.B.'s Forum sections on this site, because they contain and regularly post valuable real world advice about the Optima.

Good luck with your class and enjoy your rebreather!

Congratulations on your Optima! You will love it. I just don't know how you will be able to let it sit there for so much time before training so that you can start using it.

Re: Soon to be new Optima Diver

You should be able to do your Advanced Nitrox in parallel with the O2ptima Course, that's the way I did it (TDI).

Given you have plenty of time to wait till you dive it, this is probably a good opportunity to play with pulling the unit apart (and putting it back together) and giving it a good clean and service eg checking orings, battery terminals in handsets etc.

Unit may have been clean when shipped to you, so not need cleaning, but it will help you get familiar with the kit.

It is a great unit to dive, you should be very happy with it.

Regards,
Tony

Congratulations. I am getting close to pulling the trigger on a rebreather as soon as I make my mind up on which one.

I couldn't resist. I would still call myself a beginner on OC if I had to classify myself, but from what I hear you relearn all of your skills all over again on CC. Have you had a chance to go demo units? Boy did it feel like that first day in the pool on OC when I demo'd a few of them.
Which units are you considering?
