Re: Greetings from New Zealand

Well I picked up the unit today.
I must say I was rather please with my NZ$360 purchase (US $1.95).
Not only did I get the RG-UM/F (Really Good-Underwater Mother/F....er) but I also got...
a spare regulator trans fill whip from welding O2 (with no needle valve??? Was this guy crazy???)
A welding O2 reg with hose and CPR face mask
Assorted tools
1.333 containers of drager sorb (expired)
detergent for O2 cleaning (Shell oil Teepol washup liquid biodegradable and phosphate free) ( I think will stick with simple green).
Spares from a second scrubber can
a Bag of panty linners ( to suck up moisture in the scrubber of course)
Milton anti bacterial tablets (to clean loop??)
2 30,000kpa O2 guages unused.
2 small paint brushes
1 50L fish bin
+ some other crap

Best thing is the scrubber can has already been moded to refillable!!

Next mod for me is a DSV.

Re: Greetings from New Zealand

OK so the most obvious mod for mew seems to be a DSV. This will then allow me to use the unit as a deco Rebreather.
I thought about using a PVC ball valve assembly but have since read bad things about PVC in Rebreather's.
So Q1 Is PVC that bad?
Q2 how about a metal ball valve DSV? Will it be too heavy? I hear some people use weights on the mouth peice. Would a metal DSV help in this regard?

so you are going to use this for deco by jumping onto a cold scrubber and hoping it works. Not a bright idea,

You never know, he might have a slave who will sit at 6m breathing it for him while he comes up to that stop. Support divers have to do something... In any case, a cold scrubber is also faced by people switching to a bail-out breather, unless they've been actively switching to and fro during their dive.

Packhorse, I have a Russian nickeled brass DSV you can try if you're interested. From memory, it fits 25mm ID hoses. There's a pic of it in my Rebreather World gallery.

Re: Greetings from New Zealand

Thanks Ray I wouldnt mind checking it out.
Im also after a DIN connection for a fill whip. Do you know where I can get one local? ( I could use yoke instead if I had to)
Anyway Im off to find out why "jumping onto a cold scrubber" is a bad idea.....

Re: Greetings from New Zealand

Booster fittings, whips, adapters etc are rare in NZ. Most imported from EU or US. I got my whip, double ended DIN plus gauge, from Leisurepro.com check them out for other fittings, not all US sites will ship to NZ, also Welcome | Online Shop | W+S Water Safety Europe GmbH | Seit 1999 but any of these sources is likely to cost you big time. Welcome to Rebreather Reality...

Hopefully the availability of such components will improve when a certain local Rebreather nutter gets his on-line shop going...

You are advised to pre-breathe most if not all Rebreather's before diving. The sorb requires heat and moisture to start and sustain the scrubbing process. If it does not start, at least you are still on the boat when you get the CO2 hit

Re: Greetings from New Zealand

There's a guy on ebay.co.uk that sells the DIN to G cylinder fittings for sweet FA and quick service too. Well worth it I got a set of DIN to G Male and DIN to G Female (or something like that anyway) and they are quality stuff. To my mind just not worth the hassle of trying to locate them / get them made in NZ - it's quicker to get them ex UK.

On the pre-breathing side it's the EXHALATION into the scrubber that is important - and it doesn't matter if you INHALE off OC and EXHALE into the loop.

A BOV (NOT A DSV) Will let you do this.......

So........... why don't you make a DSV - Ray's the expert on this. His masterpiece is featured on this site no less. But I was thinking you might want to use slightly less "museumie" kit (heh, heh).

Ya gotta be joking, I live with the guy and he seems to spend all his time servicing regulators. Christ you should hear the banging, crashing and hissing coming from next door, I'm frightened to ask WTF are you doing at 0200... might be some sort of dive shop owner secret rite going on in there....

I have thought about this. Problem is I have recently heard PVC off gasses and should not be used in a breathing loop. So I need to research it more.
I may try one made out of a brass ball valve but this may be a bit heavy.
I do like using PVC as its easy to work with. I am prently making my 2nd cannister light. (mk4 cannister) using PVC and I have also made a continuos blending nitrox stick from PVC. (And isnt a rebreather just a gloified CB stick?).
