| Classic Handset Backlight gone? Have 2 units, hand set backlight just went out on both paddles on one unit. The other unit, left paddle has 1/3 of it lite up, the right paddle, nothing. Heard from SDS that if they are banged hard the BL will go out. These units are dove hard, never had a single problem over the years with the BL. Anyone seen anything like this?

| Re: Classic Handset Backlight gone? From my unit the backlights are allmost dead on the right handset. Have not tested if there is any difference if turning the light on from different slides. This has happened to my friend also. I can say that mine is dived a lot but has not got any bangs. I have heard that it is quite common for the classic electronics. I will not send for repair just for that. Maybe if I have some other problem. I have heard that it is an expensive repair cause they can not only change the backlights. JH |

Quote: (Originally Posted by devilgas) Have 2 units, hand set backlight just went out on both paddles on one unit. there is another cause fr the backlights failing.. The classic handset cases are not robust and are meant to be at ambient presure, if there is any restriction in the hoses to the handsets the pressure might not reach ambient.. the difference is usually not be enough to crack the case but it is enough to have uneven pressure on the handsets.. the sides with the largest surface area will be compressed the greatest (ths will be directly translated to the lcd since its encased in a silicon which is in contact with the case).. LCD backlights can be damaged if there is an uneven pressure exerted on them..The other unit, left paddle has 1/3 of it lite up, the right paddle, nothing. Anyone seen anything like this? check the hoses to the handsets an make sure gas can flow rather easily.. the usual cause is people attaching thigs like compasses to the hoses which pinch the hose, but debris can bulid up in the hose as well (like sorb dust)..

There really is no easy way, what I usually do is remove the connector from the handsets and loosen the connector on the lid and make sure the wiring can be moved freely within the hose..I have not had anything attached to the hoses ever. JH When you get uneven backlight failure, its almost definate it was a case compression issue.. I HAVE repaired damaged handsets by replacing the LCD display but its a real pain in the ASS (but alot cheaper than APD wants for a "replacement")

| Re: Classic Handset Backlight gone? Hello I had the same problem with one handset. Over a half year the backlight died step by step. I noticed this a bit to late - three months after the warranty was over. AP charges 180 £ for a replacement per controller. @Joe How did you repaired/replaced the LCD display? What type of LCD did they use within the controllers? Does it just need a lot of time (soldering etc.) or is it very difficult to replace the LCD display? Kind regards DINspiration |

Kind regards DINspiration I'll have to look at my notes (if I can find them) on what display it was, but if I remember correctly it was just a standard 16x2 character display.. I didn't have to order one because I had a few in my parts box.. the only thing you really have to watch is "pins on bottom" or "pins on top" when you order a replacemnet display.. The biggest pain in the ass is getting off the silicon, once thats done changing the display is easy if you are good at soldering/desoldering... then you just have to fill it up with silicon again..

| Re: Classic Handset Backlight gone? I see we are working on the problem. Thanks... I as well have not tightened anything on the outer hose as this allows the ambeint pressure from the can to pressurize the handset and equalize. The unit was taken down to 113-115 feet not deep but respectable. ![]() |
