Travel frame for Inspiration and Evolution

Here are some modeling pictures of the Travel Frame that we have been working on...

As mentioned, the primary goals are to produce a frame that is:
  • easy to travel to far-way tropical destinations
  • light weight (~2kg/4.5lb)
  • compact to fit inside most suitcases, and even large carry-on
  • yet tall enough to be comfortable when suiting up
  • able to take most Rebreather-tank sizes available locally
  • able to take wing/BP or BCD using 2 standard bolts
  • adequate protection for overhead environment, if needed
And once achieved, it would be very easy to make a heavier-version for diving with drysuit and thick undersuit when doing local dives.

We thought that we had the final version recently until it was tested on a vibrating machine for durability-test to simulate bouncing on a RIB, so I have lost track of the different models that were designed. Some were even built and tested, as metioned.

Most of the fundamental ideas came from combining the DT box (top-load) and Weenie-frame (back-load) designs. At the end, we decided on the top-load design for the inital product after careful considering pro/con's of both types.

I will post more pictures of the actual test piece later on, but at the moment, it is strong enough for at least a 75kg/165lb load to be placed across its axes.

All designs were done in solid models. Manufacturing is done by a professional company in the sheet-metal industry.

The internal dimensions were kept as small as possible to keep the rig compact and less resistant when swimming against current. Cam band straps are chosen due to its simplicity and speed when changing tanks, but using metal connections won't be an issue.

There are more featured versions with added niceties in the plan. However, to introduce them or not will depend on the response of this Travel Frame.

We will manufacture 25 frames initially within the next 2 weeks. And I will offer them to Rebreather World members first before making the announcement on the Inspiration mailing list. So let me know if anyone is interested...

Don't have an exact price yet, but I don't belive it will be more than 300 Euro... Shipping will be minimum to most members since it will be from a stocking location in Europe.

Well... looks good to me! I'm interested, let me know when you have an actual price. Whats the story with fixing a bit of lead on the top? Velcro 'cambands'?

cheers

One more picture...

You should be able to strap leads anywhere easily to help with trim.

What's it made of?

I'm interested depending on weight and size.

We want to stay away from dissimilar metal corrosion so the entire frame is made from different thickenesses of SS sheet and tubes.

Weight is ~2kg/4.5lb (less than a fully kitted 3mm SS backplate)

Height is 22" (same as DT box and Weene-frame) which has been tested to be the most suitable height for the 3L SS Inspiration tanks, as well as for suiting up on a boat.

Width/depth is at mininum (as shown on last picture) to accommodate the scrubber.

IMHO, it can't be made much smaller except making the back lid round (ala Weenie-frame). However, with a round lid, you can't lay the rig on its back to work on.

You could make it shorter, but then not comfortable to dive with since the weight distribution will be all wrong. Plus the unit will be too short to rest on a boat bench when fully kitted and waiting to be dropped, thus the entire weight be on the diver's back.

If this version sells, we might introduce a more-advanced version (but more $) with sliding feet to reduce the overall length for packing into smaller bag.

The Classic Inspiration with Hammerhead lid is the largest package, so that is what we use to check for fit.

The test unit is being tested at the moment. As soon as we are sure that everything is working as perfectly as possible, we will run the batch of 25 units. Then we'll know the cost/price.

Thands for all of PM's expressing interest, I will update everyone via the thread.
