| Proper Boffin ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Buzzer has packed up... After 4 years of faultless performance, no returns to factory and many hundreds of hours of use, finally my Inspo has decided to present me with a failure. The buzzer is now no longer working. For some people, perhaps they would consider this a bonus, but for me, although I never rely on the buzzer, if this has failed, then I don't know what else might be linked and may fail in the future. If I hold the buzzer up to my ear, I can hear a faint click when I would expect it to buzz, so it would appear that the loom is OK, and it's getting a signal, but the sounder is not sounding. Has anyone had this fail before, and if so, how much did AP charge for a replacement? |

![]() | Re: Buzzer has packed up... Mine died on me a couple of weeks ago after a flight back from Lanzarote - its with AP at the moment for inspection so I'll let you know what they charge me... Same symptoms - turn unit on, no buzz, scratch head a bit, wonder what I've done wrong, switch off, then on, no buzz, panic a bit (first dive after doing the course!), listen very carefully, hear it clicking... | Proper Boffin ![]() Current Rebreather/s: | Re: Buzzer has packed up... Well it still works OK, dived today, and (as usual) didn't hear a peep out of the thing - still interested to see how much AP would charge for a replacement - I suspect that it will be somewhere in the region of the "Full" service and re-loom.... ouch. Maybe I'll just stick with (even more) silent diving for now! |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Buzzer has packed up... If you unscrew the face of the buzzer, you'll end up with a housing on a hose with an internal thread, and a buzzer in your hand with an o-ring and a pair of wires soldered to two contacts. That's all there is. There're pics of one unscrewed in the Classic Corner bit of SWM if you want a look. So, a) Percussive Maintenance - give it a whack. b) buy another buzzer from AP to solder on yourself. I'd be interested in the cost of this too. c) Get Routley to turn a delrin plug to fill the hole, then cut and seal the buzzer wires. I think the buzzer is a pietzo type, but I could be wrong. There is a bronzy/brassy metally bit inside I've been told - maybe yours has been metal-fatigued? Just be careful - people remove the buzzer for deep stuff because the brassy bit deforms to short the buzzer out. If you have a manky bit of metal in there floating around, there is a very tiny, miniscule chance that it could do the same thing and then your handsets will be stuffed for the rest of the dive. You could solder an MP3 player + amp to a working buzzer, but how would you control it? If some nice person swapped your MP3s for the Birdy Song on a loop, you'd be voluntarily turning your O2 off on deco to make the nastiness stop... ![]()
