Modification to Inspiration harness

Hi all, I have done a modification to my harness and thought I'd share it with you all.

I was getting fed up with the side D-rings folding flat when trying to clip my stages on so I bought some sailing yarn from my local chandlers, some 50mm webbing and the d-rings below from Kent Tooling:

I fixed the webbing to the harness and threaded the d-ring clip and fastened the other end:

I made the webbing longer so that I could alter the position of the D-ring on the harness.

Not sure what other people have done, but It looks ok so far.

John

Nicely done John, but you don't need them anymore if you switch to sidemount.

Re: Modification to Inspiration harness

Hi John,

Setup looks good. I know loads of people who do something similar. I personally dont, as I find the drings dig into my shoulders.

Hope you are well

Pete

What thread did you use for the stitching? Gonna have a go at this, this weekend. Where has the photo gone?

Re: Modification to Inspiration harness

I went to my local chandlers and bought some waxed yarn. I'll be honest, it would be easier with a sewing machine but the one I have access to (mums) wasn't strong enough.
I had to do it by hand using a pair of pin-nosed pliers. I went through 3 needles so be prepared for a work out on your hands.

Due to the terrible bloody weather here on the South coast of the UK, I still haven't had the chance to try it out in-water. Did some dry-run practice though and they seem to be good.

If you can't see the picture, let me know and I can send you one.

John

Use the right tool for the job, and you'll find it easier next time. What you want is a sewing awl (about $15 US, or less than half that in pounds...) See here: http://www.awlforall.com/images/product.jpg

Most outdoor, marine, and backcountry stores can hook you up with one, and it makes those kind of tasks a lot easier next time. They're made to work on sails for boats. It's a generally good tool to have in the toolkit, especially if you don't have an industrial-grade sewing machine.

I can get through two layers of nylon webbing on my machine, if I change needles frequently, but not three, so these things come in very handy.

Mate it with some heavy duty polyester thread (or nylon, although nylon degrades in UV pretty badly, and soaks up water...) and you should be golden.
