Vision head not working after storing for a month

Here's the story.... I went off on a trip and left my unit sitting in my warm dry kitchen for a month. now i probably should have removed the batteries from the head but i forgot. I left the batteries in my TV remote control as well and had no issue.

After the rebreather sitting there doing nothing I turned it on two nights ago and it started up to the battery check, displayed that one of my batteries (can't remember which) had 5.4v and the other had 0.0v. It then displayed an error saying that there was no primary controller and if i wanted to dive or not. I said that i didn't. Ok i put this down to a dud battery and left it there.

I replaced the batteries last night and turned the machine on. Now there is nothing being displayed on the display - it just remains blank. The HUD is flashing two red lights and the buzzer is beeping at me. The solenoid is clicking on and off as well and to get it to turn off I have to remove the batteries from the head.

I have left the head out with no batteries in it overnight just to see what happens and the behavior is exactly the same tonight.

I should also mention that when I connect it to the computer link the display reads 'PC Link X' (x is either 1 or 3)

Re: Vision head not working after storing for a month

Notwithstanding making sure the new battery actually works, it's worth searching the archives - this sounds familiar, though a search hasn't turned anything up. It may have come up on the Inspiration list, rather than here.

There is a reset process, which I know others have tried in the case of this kind of problem. Again, a search should give you it (it involves shorting the pins in the battery box).

If that doesn't work, then I'd give Nicky a call.

Cheers,

I had the same thing happen to be an 2 different occasions, the first time I sent the unit back to the UK for repair and they said they replaced the hand set but it happened to me this weekend and caused me to abort a dive. I have asked the question to SDS again and am waiting on a responce. I did manage to get the system up and running again but only after letting the unit sit for a few hours with the batteries out.

Re: Vision head not working after storing for a month

Try holding the "on" button down while inserting the batteries. It sounds similar to an issue that I had, which eventually I had to send the head back to SDS (and they sent it off to the UK).

Aloha,
Charlie

Re: Vision head not working after storing for a month

you could try a soft reset..

Get a pair of long nose pliers and connect the 2 springy terminals in the 2 battery boxes together...I had to do it when I originally had problems with my head.

Dont know if this actually does something or is an old wives tale coz my head ended up going back to AP to be repaired

yep it does do something. i had to do that a couple of times last year before the new software came out. I used two spanners to bridge each side of the battery box and then touch them together to short all 4 terminals. basically resets the device

Re: Vision head not working after storing for a month

You guys are dangerous --- a little bit of knowledeg and all that.

If you short out the terminals of B2 you discharge the C2 capacitor, so when you next turn it on, it'll ask you to enter the date and time. I am pretty sure, you can't "reset" the software by shorting out terminals!

Have you loaded Version 4 software? I read that included a fix for switching C2 off properly. It could be that the unit hasn't switched off properly and so now won't restart ?

If you've got the new software and it's still not switching on, I'd give AP a call.

Actually i called AP and they reccomended shorting the terminals so it would completely discharge and residual power in the unit and allow the controllers to be completely reset/shut down.

Unfortunately it didn't resolve the issue which was caused by a software bug in 2.0.3 where one of the controllers does not shut down completely and therefore drains the battery. And yes its fixed in 2.0.4 but i can't upload the update until we get the head fixed.

I'll be elaving the batteries out over the weekend to see if it makes a difference but if not the head will be sent back to AP on Monday and it should be a simple operation for them to get it fixede and updated.
