Vision handset potting gel

The Vision handset has a gel inside it containing the circuit boards. Does anyone know what this stuff is?

Looks like silicone gel.

It dissolves in dichloromethane, as does the paint they use to cover chip names. You may need to heat it a bit, or wait a day before it all comes away.

Not wanting to cross threads, but a member came to the rescue with O2 available. At least the hotel has internet, so work can be done ..

May I ask the purpose of removing the silicone?
