Talking All the broken/failing parts on my unit...

Hi all,

Just for fun (it wasn't fun at all when the problems occured), here is a list of all the broken or failing parts I had on my Inspiration and my Evolution.

So please share your experience. Tell us what happened with your unit. it could even be a kind of contest: "the most amazing problem with a YBOD"

Here is my list:

With my Inspiration (5 year old, used for training):
- broken wires (Molex connectors, solenoid)
- rusted magnets (it looks like I changed them 2 000 times!!)
- broken On/Off button and cracked handset (a student stepped on it)
- O2 manual injector falling down during a deep dive)
- rusted battery compartment
- flooded electronics (twice!!)
- jammed solenoid (completely rusted inside)
- broken latch (3 times)
- free-flowing Auto-Air (not really a failing component. It looks like it's designed to do that...)

With my Evolution (less than 3 month old):
- no more stickers on the manual injectors (bad glue according to APD)
- rusted steel tanks
- fading chrome on the 1st stages (not a problem, according to APD)
- frozen display during the last software upgrade (3 uploading procedures were necessary to solve the problem)
- leaking ADV shut-off valve

cheers

- rusted magnets x 3 per year

- free-flowing Auto-Air (actually fell apart inside a 60m wreck and I lost most of dil!)

- leaking ADV

  • Snapped plastic manifold bracket.
  • Slight rusting round base of inboard tins.

Both sides of the story....

My unit (2004 Classic) has been good on the whole, seems I got on of the last good ones! But....

  • Injector labels fell off - got replacements FOC from AP
  • Black case cracked at the base - my own fault for dragging it about
  • Handset magnets rusted - cleaned, greased, not replaced, but got spares FOC from AP
  • Replaced the standard D-Rings with some lovely rigid welded ones from John Perrin at Kent Tooling - much easier to clip on and off stages
On a positive note compared to some other peoples common probems
  • ADV has been good as gold, never free-flowed, works fine. It has been the cause of failed +ve tests, but now I strip and maintain it about one a month and it's been fine since
  • ADV shut off works perfectly, does not leak and is used on every dive (shut off once at target depth to aid min loop volume operation)
  • Autoair has also been good as gold. I told myself that I would rip it off the first time it misbehaves, I stand by this statement, but it's still on the unit after a year of troublefree operation
  • Standard harness is comfortable and functional and still in place. It's not ideal, sure, but it works.
Overall, totally happy with the unit. But I still want a Meg!!!

So then, leaks ya say...

Oh well, in for a penny. I bought mine off one of the first owners (No. 3) so its been round the houses and not much of it is original anymore, but still I've had the joy of the following.

Leaks:
ADV (now and then)
flow stop (usually when I need it)
first stages (old seamann sub type, need to go in the bin really)
pillar valves (causing loss of o2 )
LP hoses (o2 and wing)
BOV and original DV
Wing (both bladder and LPI)
CL's (replaced)

(I dont think there is anything else - literally..!! )

Other:
Handset failure ( batteries went down in BOTH)
Cracked T piece
Hole in breathing hose

The whole thing was stripped, sonically cleaned and fully serviced after I bought it. Its no wonder it got coined a YBOL (yellow bag o' leaks). However, I'm glad to say that it is now nearly perfect, though some of the above problems still remain.

Its worth noting that the Inspo has a shelf life of 7 years IIRC and that all things perish in time. If I'd of had the choice again I wonder whether a later unit would have performed better, or maybe mine was just 'one of them'. Keeps me off the streets though.

HTH

It states in the user manual that the shelf life of the Inspiration is 7 years if the Rebreather is unused. By profession I dive/work with rebreathers, and a 7 year shelf life of unsed Rebreather is not uncommon. Basically after we pull a RB from storage all we do is change all the o-rings and run it thru a series of tests.

As far as the Inspiration goes all I can say is that I've only had mine since May, and any problems I've had has been my fault. When I bought it it was used with about a 100hrs on it, since then I've put another 40hrs. After reading tons of posts about rusting magnets I decided to check mine. I found that the maget was corroded, so I cleaned it up and put it back together. For whatever reason I only did one handset, and that next day I went diving. Guess what the only handset that gave me grief was the one I clean. Either it didn't work at all or it would keep scrolling the display. Since then the only maintaince I have done to the handsets is a good fresh water rinse.
