| Re: Homemade DPV Mind sharing where you are getting motors so cheap? Used. A rewind on the armature cost around $250 if I remember correctly. Then you need the housing, etc. I replace the bearing with ss ones from Mcmaster and solder on my own 10 gauge wire leads (drill the board out with a 1/8" bit). It can be done. You just have to be patient. I've seen old Tekna's sell for between $350 to $500. That would you get a running motor, prop/clutch assembly and shroud which is a good start. |

| Re: Homemade DPV What are the options to seal the prop shaft. Also, how do the variable pitch props work. Each blade is on a pivot which is connected to a screw which is in turn connected to the clutch. I suppose if you had access to injection moulding and machining kit then you could make each part but for a very simple system it's quite complicated. The prop seal is basically a rubber disc held in place by a tensioned spring. As I recall Lucas (the car part manufacturer) make them. I wouldn;t imagine pneumatic drive would be especially efficient (I've used air tools underwater and they eat big gas volumes for very little work). Work class ROV's use hydraulic motors but they are very big and very expensive. Cheers, Stuart

| Re: Homemade DPV I totally agree on the Kursk. There has been some question where hey had problems loading the new fish (Shkval) into the forward compartment. This could have lead to leaks in the fish. I believe the test units were a larger diameter then their standard fish that were using the silver batteries, and there has been some questions about the work the technicians did before loading into the tubes. If I remember they had onboard quite a few technicians. (Things that go boom!) Interesting version- Russian submarine Kursk explosion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Didn’t the Brits have a real problem with a sub with this technology? I think it was in the late 50’s or 60’s? Has anyone considered using an impeller like what the seadoo boats do? Replace the drive system with either electricity or another method. Regards, Andrew
