| Re: Kip-8 Or take a look at the nice D5 homebulid: http://www.sump4.com/rebreather/d5_construction.html I just bought one and I must say I'm very impressed by the easy WOB in almost every position. Of course I have some modifications going on (dual CL, ,gas addition, etc). I'm sure you could make something similar either as a sidemount or as a more conventional straight tube on the back with small cylinders on the sides. This sort of setup gets rather long on the back but WOB is actually OK with it on the back. Except if you lay down on the bottom on your back. Anyway, regardless if you fancy that sort of setup or the Classic KISS mimic Dave describes a nice way of doing it is to have two backplates. One for the diver to use and the other flipped around back to back. The other backplate can hold the scrubber in the middle and small cylinders on the sides. If space is required for both CL and a wing against the divers back (like on a Classic KISS or a RAY) choose backplates with a steeper angle and you get space for them. For a tube style setup with the CL on the same axis as the scrubber backplates with a flatter angel makes the profile lower. I have been tinkering with this sort of twin backplate frame for my RAY and some homebuilds and its a very easy way of getting something to attach a scrubber in the middle with cylinders on the sides and still get space for CL close to the back. Its late, I'm lazy and my gear is in the basement but I can post a few pictures of the the backplate arrangement later. For CL material it is actually not impossible to find companys that can either vulcanise flexible rubber bags on demand or weld bags similar to MSR-bags. When I was looking I found out that it would cost the equivalent of ~80 USD here in Sweden to make a custom CL out of a rubber very smilar to the KIP-8 CL. And I cannot imagine it would be any more expensive in the US. Another option is to look around for the sort of machine that welds thermoplastic bags. Something that applies pressure and heat to form a weld. Its a very simple machine, we happen to have one at work and I have happily used it to fix split BCD-bladders and to improvise Rebreather-lungs for testing. If you go for the glueing of bags don't forget that it can take a long time for the glue to harden, its not so fun to breath a pratial glue vapor mix on your test dive... To get started I can only agree that MSR or similar bags and P-conns are very nice to work with (I envy how much cheaper MSR-bags are in the US). If you want to do some very simple testing of different setups "bag in box"- wine bags are good for a few dives...I prefer the transparent kind. Shit, this Rebreather-homebuilding thing is a serious addiction. I almost thought of selling most of my stuff and staying with one rig this winter. But that would have been far to easy ![]() Last edited by jaap : 11th July 2006 at 23:08. |

| Re: Kip-8 Here are a few pics of the kip I did up, a simple plate and wing, drager Bg174 lung, modified scubapro 109 for demand valve, I drilled a hole in the top of the shell so I could push the scubapro valve for bypass, IDA-71 hoses and DSV, 6cf bottle with 02 clean scubapro firststage and pressure gauge, a really fun rig to play with in the shallows, very light. |

Also there is not much more room in the case to fit a bigger scrubber, but if you still want to go for it, I have a shell and scrubber, and maybe a few other parts for $125.00. If he doesn't want it. I'll take it. |

Attach the scrubber to the middle of a backplate and add two PVC pipe lengths parallel to the scrubber on either side as close to the backplate as possible. Stuff the neoprene counerlungs down them for protection. Use irrigation pipe for the PVC as it has a million holes in it. Attach a pair of small cylinders lain on the intersection of the PVC pipes and the scrubber on each side and band it all together with stainless steel hose clamps. You've just roughly replicated a KISS rebreather in form and layout. Add pneumatics. Substitute MSR bags .... Dave,Dave Good Idea! ![]() The red CL's are MSR Hydromedary bags - better shape for an enclosed CL than the usual Dromedary bags. Dan P.S. Sorry - didn't mean to hijack the thread. | Re: Kip-8 Hello Also very well done! Congratulations. The diluent bottle can be a lot smaller, but if you use it for bailout and wings? Why not. Nice work!there is my first version of the economical dangerous KIP-8 mccr. for the moment tested out of water P-Connector and PP02 meters next? Dave Sutton
