| Holiday diver Current Rebreather/s: | el cheapo hoses Been my old cheap self again and bought a pair of breathing hoses from hong kong. Offered on ebay "kiss/ inspo/ homebuild breathing hoses, on a "buy now" offer. Quite cheap. They got delivered promptly, and do look and feel like breathing hoses. Only they smell like a servo. They stink. My mother picked them up from the postoffice, where they we're happy to see the back off them. When I went over to mums for coffee and said hoses, she frowned at me, thanked me profoundly for having them send to her address, pointed at the parcel laying outside and advised me to open my car windows. After coming home I threw them in dish water for an hour, but that didn't help. For soaking I trew them in the pond for a day, and ended up with 2 dead fish. So back into dish water, and rinsed them and left them in the shed for a week. By now, the smell is less, but still noticable. I don't think it might be the best of ideas to take them diving yet.... Any ideas what to do with them to get rid of the smell? Not ready to bin them. Denz.

| Re: el cheapo hoses Sounds like an aromate to me....(a hydrocarbons, like benzene, toluene and the likes), maybe used in production phase to prevent the material from becomming to stiff or even brittle. You could try to evaporate it. Put it in the sun for a while and see what happens. The weather in Holland is just right at the moment. ![]()

Any one any idea what to do with them, other then to dump them? Or would it be safe to dive them, since it's just a faint smell...... Denz.

Why? its effect only gets worse at depth. Same principle. stop being a tightarse, write it off as a bad buy, and get yourself some hoses from a more reputable source. see ya rachel

| Re: el cheapo hoses http://www.dot.state.ny.us/progs/safety/sb-94-7a.html Read the first lines and you'll know why not to use them.... Other arromates have similar effects or worse (with dioxine being the most infamous I guess)... My hope was in surface application only but I guess it's worse than that.

| Re: el cheapo hoses I ordered a pair of these too... but mine don't stink! Hmmmm........maybe yours were contaminated somehow? Mine were in sealed plastic bags, and had no appreciable odor - no more than the O2ptima hoses that I have.....

| Holiday diver Current Rebreather/s: | Re: el cheapo hoses Mmmm, yours don't smell eh? Mine were also packed in plasic bags, but even a lead case wouldn't have stopped that smell! But a week or 2 later again, and the smell is virtually gone. Will leave them in the garden a few weeks more, and take them to brisney land to be checked out by Bendomatic herself, in order to avoid any more slapping from SWMBO... Denz.

Denz.Any chance of a full spec on these hoses. Am interested in the material, the size length and end cuff diameters. Also the price you paid or the buy now if thats OK. A picture would be perfect. I looked on ebay but found nothing. Corrugated rubber mouldings are used for many purposes, Corrugated moulded rubber or EPDM compounds are used in ordinary hose as well as breathing tubes. Both types and all compounds will "off gas" from manufacture and from the release agents used in the mould tool. However if the hose is used as a breathing hose for aircraft mine rescue or diving then the compounds and release agents are strictly controlled. (smell but not badly and for a short time) Also before delivery they are cleaned of release agent before packing. In this competitive world it is not unheard of that good samples of well designed hose get sent over to china for a copy to be made. Without the full specification and MITP Manufacture Inspection and Test Procedure being carried out the China copy is surprise surprise not to the same standard. Let me guess you get these life support products from Ebay with: 1. No certificate of conformity 2. No batch code on material compound 3. No cure date of manufacture 4. No certficate of elongation and deflection. 5. No certificate of pull stretch and elongation. 6. No crush, scuff or dimensional tolerance test cert. Ok soap box over, for the hard time if you want a sample of what a divers breathing hose should smell like (free of charge) email me off post. Last edited by iain-hsm : 27th July 2006 at 23:48.
