| Re: For the IDA71 homebuilder (7): Adding a drysuit piss-zipper (relief zipper) to the counterlung makes is easy to access the inside for maintenance and drying.. ;-). (And I bet that's the firt time ya'll have thought about that....!). Easy to add and not expensive.... waterproof zippers are great things in counterlungs! HiBest to all, Dave Sutton Yes thats a nice thing, did you help Lasse Ljungqvist at Divex in Stockholm to come up with that? He has had an IDA-71 with a piss-zipper in his store for at least 7-8 years now. |

| Re: For the IDA71 homebuilder [quote=Dave Sutton;65197]Hey Guys, Some words from the one who started it all in the IDA-71 world... ;-) (1): We have abandoned the single scrubber configuration for al diving below perhaps 20 meters. We now use both scrubbers, internal 02 bottle, and external diluent slung as a stage bottle and fed to the rig thru quick disconnects. Choose the size of the stage to suit depth and bailout requirements. My own rig now allows modular use of single scrubber and internal diluent and two scrubbers with external diluent.... choose according to workload and depth intended. Hi Dave, What made you decide on a depth restriction for the single scrubber use? Do you find: 1 The scrubber is less efficient at greater depths, making the second one necessary? 2 You work harder - produce more CO2 at greater depths? 3 You are not too worried about breakthrough at shallow depths because you can bail out easily? 4 Some other reason I cant think of right now? Cheers, Peter |

| Re: For the IDA71 homebuilder Two answers in one: DIVEX: I'm not sure if I mentioned the zipper to him, he sent me an (EXCELLENT!) regulator that they build for test about that time (Did I mention that DIVEX regulators are EXCELLENT?) and might have discussed the piss zipper, cannot remember. The depth limit we've placed on the IDA-71 single scrubber configuration is based on emprirical evidence: I *personally* had a couple of hypercapnia incidents on the thing in the single scrubber configuration in deeper water. I recovered both situations by STOPPING and resting for a minute, but trust me: The stimulus to panic and bolt for the surface was fully triggered and trust me on this too: I DO NOT get triggered to want to do that. It's a purely physiological responce to hypercapnia. I recognized it, rested, and was back to normal in 1 minute. With that said, (A): I'm not sure that many divers would recognbize the problem for what is was, and (B): I was lucky to be in a position where I could stop and rest. OC Bailout was, of course, available at the twist of a knob (I *always* dive an OC/CC DSV on rigs other than my mini-breather). Physiologically, the depth issue is as follows: Just like 02 being measured by partial pressure and not percent, C02 partial pressure for any given percent of C02 in the loop also rises with depth. Your physiology responds to C02 *partial pressure* and high PPC02 is what triggers the hypercapnia. So deeper the depth, the more efficient the C0 removal must be. Bottom line: DO NOT think for a minute that a single scrubber IDA-71 will give you the scrubber capacity for deep diving. Shallow water? It's fine. It's probably fine ideeper in warm water and low workload diving too. My problems were in North Atlantic, cold, turbid, deep, dry-suited, full-game wreck diving. In this arena you need all of the cards in your hand to be aces (which is why I'm diving my Mark-15 here for "serious" diving again). Dave Sutton

| Re: For the IDA71 homebuilder As I see in attached bitmap the interstice in the scrubber isn't usable as water trap, the exaled gas and the water first go in sodalime then in the interstice, i can invert scrubbers hole?? Last edited by Corallaro : 14th November 2006 at 14:57. |

I use my scrubber the 'wrong' way around with no problem but the space to collect any water is still minimal.
