| Holiday diver Current Rebreather/s: | When are you ... Was just wondering, when are you a homebuilder? Do you have to run to the camping shop for CL's, to the mitre10 or bunnings for plumbing, cut seatbelts out of a wrecked car for webbing, strip your digi watch for ppo2 monitoring screen and parts, use your mum's mixer for electronics, your GF's toy for vibra hud etc etc etc. Or do you also qualify if you get a unit and start adding non-standard parts like a kiss valve and ppo2 monitoring made by someone else? Am not in a identycrises, just wondering. denz.

| Re: When are you ... If you ask around among the commercial producers of rebreathers, I am sure they will tell you that; You are a Homebuilder/Do-It-Yourself'er/On-your-own as soon as: You do anything to your unit that will void the warranty. That, and of cause building one from scratch. (Or salvaged parts) Now go and do it! ![]()

| If you are asking about group therapy; it just happened it’s called- DEMA. If you have aversion to asking really weird questions then yep; this type of diving is not for you. Certain examples come to mind- Standing in a Harley store asking for a tire tube for a 4” motorcycle tire. They start asking for numbers and you comment “just pick one” they get a little weird. Suddenly the guy behind the counter with long hair and tats is asking what’s it for? Do you know how hard it is to explain to a biker what a rebreather is or life support? My standard answer is I need it for a float for my dive flag. God forbid you say counterlung…. Most recently while rummaging through gas masks at my local army/navy store checking out the one way valves in the gas masks. For starters they are no good (too small and deformed,) secondary they keep commenting- this stuff is for party and gag gifts. They just hate it when you call out what they have on the shelf by name- "hey how much for the Biopak 45"- they comment- huuuuh? It becomes really difficult at times. The worst is going into recreational dive stores- “hey you guys sell US Divers/ Aqualung?”- “yep” comes from behind the counter. You ask for a Dreager part and they look at you like you want to build a certain accelerator for the Dept of Energy. What the heck is this… But it can be fun at times…. Then again I get enough looks at the local dive spot when I sidemount never mind take a rebreather there. Then again the sign at the entrance does advise divers that a “decompression chamber” is not on site. Damn I hate when that happens. Later, Andrew |
